    They have similar systems on pedestrian crossings in some US and
    Candian cities. Quite useful if you're wondering whether to rush or
    not.

    In Sydney the crossings make a noise that sounds like it's straight out
    of the radiophonic workshop.

    In Turkey there is a countdown for both cars and pedestrians. However the
    propensity for the locals to just shoot the red lights means you have to
    keep a close eye open.

    When asked why he shot the red, the guilty party will reply "There was
    nothing coming." whilst standing next to the wreckage of two cars,
    providing excellent evidence to the contrary.
