Well, finally had some time this evening at work to see why the bloody
idle sits at 1800 - 2000 rpm unless i "push" back on the throttle.

Adjuster at the throttle end on the bars is at its slackest setting so
its a tank off and find the other end of the cables.

Yep, i can see the 2 adjusters as in the pic
    http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d33/Donegal_Paul/CB500/cbthrottle.jpg
but when i try to tighten up the return one it just sends the whole
thing slack and makes no difference at all.
Looking at the cack pics in the haynes manual its hard to see the
adjusters properly but much staring and consternation and it finally
clicked i think, hence my throwing myself on the mercy of the font and
those that know a lot more about bikes than me.

so, the adjuster with the black arrows the throttle pull, and you can
see the adjuster bracket and a nut on each side of the bracket to
    adjust tension.

However when you look at the red arrowed one there is only one nut at
the bottom and none at the top, now, i could understand this if the
bracket it goes through was threaded, but its not, so my question is

shoukd there, or should there not be another nut on the adjuster?

Haynes is FA help, but its looking more and more like there should be
one, i just dont want to feck about with the cables though if i dont
    have to :-/

Oh and after putting it all together 4 miles into the home journey and
it feels like im out of petrol and dies, after a couple of minutes i
sussed it was a kinked vacuum hose! That'll teach me not to rush

  2. Sure they're not just sticky cables - they look a bit gunked up to me ?

There probably should be a nut there, but that's unlikely to be the
problem. Try disconnect the 'push' cable and make sure that the
twistgrip 'snaps' back when you let go of it. If it doesn't then the
pull cable, the twist grip, or the carb mechanism itself is gummed up.

Although it does look like the braket has been "opened" slightly. The
threaded section of the adjuster should be a pretty snug fit inside the
bracket and the locknut at the bottom wouldn't try t drag the whole adjuster
    through the bracket.

Those cable look fooking dreadful though. Clean them as a matter of course.
Not necessary if the adjuster can't be dragged through the beacket, so close
the bracket to where it should be and you're fine.
I'd say you have to. Uncouple them and let the old WD 40 or any other
penetrating oil get down the cables.
    Rush? :)

I'd say the whle throttle line from grip to carbs would benefit from a
    cleaning and re-lubing.
