I know there are a lot of budding pornographers on here, oops sorry,
    photographers.
What is the online album flavour of choice for storing/showing your
    creations?
Minimal cost would be preferable, Free, would be perfect :)
have a few "snaps" that I took at the London Motorcycle museum yesterday
and have a couple of friends that wants to see them.
Flickr works out pricey, Picasa I've not really got to grips with, are there
other that are better and cheaper?
Your help and advice is always much appreciated.

Photobox always give goods prints at reasonable prices, and you can
create albums in your storage space, then make them either private or
    public.
I've just made one 'public' now to try it out:

I like the look of this, but it doesn't seem to allow me to download the
    full size picture?
Is there some kind of restriction setting in the control panel for the
    public group?

Hmm, I see what you mean. I think it is brwoser dependent - it works in
Firefox, but not with Opera. Just click on the pic in FF, and a new
window opens with full size pic in it.

Likewise. A new tab opens but the image doesn't actually appear.

Dropbox seems to be very reasonable. 2 gig storage, or if you use a referal,
2 -1/4 gig storage. Free too.

Get a domain and hosting sorted out and shove them up there. Not
exactly expensive and you have total control.

There's a free version of flickr - you don't have to go pro. You're
limited to 100MB of uploads a month and limited in size to 1024 width or
height - so resize before you upload and you can get loads of photos done
    in a month.

Or like Colin says, host it yourself. There's loads of gallery software
options around, most will use php, some need a database and some don't.
I've used Coppermine, ZenPhoto and a.n.other that I can't remember.

There's also a max of about 200 pics total, and a fairly small number
    (2?) of albums.

<shrug> I rarely upload that many photos anyway. If by albums, you mean
sets, I have something like 8 of them. Unless you mean 2 per month.
Again, not a problem for a light user.

Not that I'm defending flickr. It's OK, but ain't all that. :)

Coppermine is fine if you want multiple users, comments etc.. For
    simple viewing-only I use Jalbum.

    Thanks for all the info.
I've decided to try out photobox for the moment and see how it goes. It
seems to be easy enough to use and share for my simple needs.
    Wifey's photo's here;

    http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/492942582

in case anybody is remotely interested. This was the main reason for
something easy and simple so that she can show her family and friends.
I'll keep a note of the other suggestions and have a look at them in greater
    detail and perhaps move later.
    Thanks again.

I prefer to host it myself but I like the look of Jalbum - I normally use
Web Album Generator to create albums locally for me to upload to my own
space but it's looking a bit dated now.

    Any suggestions for album generators?

I use Jalbum too. I don't bother with the comments and stuff, but for
the album itself it just works.

    It works:
    http://sweller.jalbum.net/Mexico-2010/

....but I'm still after one that creates an album contained in a folder
locally so I can host it mysef.

That's what I do. Go into preferences, set the "Output directory" to be
where you want it to create the album and make sure "Output to image
    directory" is unticked.

As an example, I have the web site hosted on a local Linux VM under
/var/www/html, and I use Samba to export that as a CIFS share. On my
Windows box I have \\webserver\www mapped to W: and in Jalbum I have it
    configured to write to W:\album

    It Just Works.

Yeah, I used to use that too. It got to the point though where it was a
pain in the butt to add a couple of photos, create the new album, upload
the album. Now I just upload the photo to the photo gallery and job's a
good-un. It sorts out the rest.
