I've scanned in some photos from a 1949 booklet at 600 dpi for an
article I'm writing. Obviously, it's made up of dots from the original
plate process. Question: should I try to smooth these out before
submitting to my publisher, and if so how? or simply send them as they
are without risking introducing any more artefacts. What says the FOAK?

What scale is the scan to be reproduced?

Smaller than the original? Don't bother.
Larger than the original? There are special filters available to handle the
patterns caused by the print process but they take some trial-n-error to get
    the best affect.

Well, I planned 1:1 but the editors may differ
likely to be original or smaller, I suspect. So I won't bother, thanks
for that. If they want to go bigger that's up to them. I'm sending them
TIFFS on a CD-ROM so they get every bit I got!
