Right, bought a 2.5l ultrasonic cleaner from maplins and just been
playing with it and put a cack old carb in

to be honest it doesnt look much cleaner than it went in :-/

am i missing a trick here or what?

im using it on the heated setting, even a bit of washing up liquid in
there too and on longest settings.

UC's are somewhat over rated but you might want to think about something a
bit stronger on the old chemical front

I use a UC regularly and for my purposes warm soapy water is good.
I used to use ammonia in there too but it fairly stinks.
I have wondered about using parafin or diesel (explosive?) for dirty
bike bits or even a Gunk type additive in the mix.

Was about to do the latter then thought better and stripped it.

what i didnt do at first though was clean any crud off it as i thought
it may do that with the ultrasonics.

I'm wondering if I should have degreased it and possibly a bit of brake
cleaner to clean out any oil etc.
It says it goes to a max of 65 degrees, and set it for the max time
    which is 8 mins.

hmm yes, it came with a flyer about some sea clean concentrate that
will apparantly remove tarnishes, carbon and even rust it says.

Ah, I do give things a bit of a blast with standard carb cleaner first.

Mine can go much longer. I generally use a 30 degrees for 30 minutes
cycle. Though Simon Wilson warns me I might burn it out if I repeat that
    too soon/often.

I have a can of 'Green' i.e. eco friendly gunk in reserve, but the 50%
Autoglym stuff seems to work OK. It certainly sorted out the Keihin from
    SWMBO's Honda.

Yes, I got mine from an Ebay source. I didn't know Maplins did one big
enough to hold a carb body.

I naughtily used it for a bit of hyper-degreasing on some rear
suspension linkages recently (so that I could heat them in our cooker)
and seem to have got away with it.
