The last time I went anywhere near Croydon I ended up seeing a mate's
wife naked, and although I saw the fanny side, he didn't see the funny
    side.

Indeed, a 4 storey town house in Holywood £330k in 2005 is now selling over
    £600k

Probably - I'm a bit out of touch with market rates.. Suspect I'm
probably earning about half what I could in the city. And about 25%
less than I could by a well planned move to a new employer.
    Probably 270-280 now.
Makes you wonder how people on regular salaries afford them.

    They reckon so, yes.
    Quite.

The thing about location/price difference is how much the price can
change for such a small distance. There's a 5 bed place on a new
development in Bracknell at £480k. 20-ish miles away in Thatcham, the
*exact* same design of house is £100k cheaper.

Because they can't afford to live closer to London?

Indeed. I had to mentally sanity check it a couple of times when I typed
it but, as Champ pointed out, it is correct. I sometimes wonder where the
hell all my income goes, it's not as if I have an extravagant lifestyle.

Oh, hang on....my £190k mortgage. That's where all my income goes....

There is a huge amount of truth in this, particularly the credibility
    thing.

When I was at school I affected a literate wordiness and eloquence,
precisely as a means of being different from my peers, who tended to do the
opposite in what was an excellent grammar school. If anything has served
me well in later life, it was that: Mealy mouthed gobshites don't go down
    well at board level.

Hah. I reacquainted myself with Beanos whilst doing my civic duty, haven't
been in there for 20 years odd. But it's moved across Church Street, does
mostly CD and DVDs and seemed to be selling most of them at silly prices.
Lost most of its charm as a result :-(

Does Maidenhead count as London for salary-increase-based willy-waving
    purposes?

Last time I went anywhere near Croydon I ended up buying a £7k(ish)
    car.

The previous time I went anywhere near Croydon I ended up buying a
    £5k(ish) motorcycle.

I'm fucked if I'm going anywhere near Croydon again, for the sake of
    my bank balance.

    not me.

Our /combined/ household income is into six figures by a sizeable
    margin, though.
    Espindola's comfortably in the zone.

    Well, I'm into 6 figures in /euros/ ;-)
this is where the mortgage comes in as a factor too, mind. Our
mortgage payments are around 30% of our after-tax income.
I was including the stupid bonus they get (120%), without IIRC he's
    similarly paid to myself.
