Given that there are a few Lunnon IT workers and 100k is just over £400 a
    day EKS I expected more.

I'll bet he doesn't. I do nothing more than feed my own bad habits and I do
    not feel particularly well off.

WTF do families on the median £20k or so income survive, even if they are
paying only rent and not mortgages.

Lets face it there probably isn't a family size house in the country outside
    Grimsby they could buy anyway.
I suppose to feel *really* smug these days it takes a pre tax income of
£250,000 assuming a decent mortgage of £750k to live somewhere nice.

WTF does he do to get a bonus of that magnitude? I thought he was IT, only
stockbrokers and bankers get those sorts of windfalls IME.

  4. Mine was half that, and I was similarly grateful.

    We're "poor people", aren't we?

Mine used to be in that region then the scheme got re-worked, the pot
got smaller and has been shrinking year on year. I'm fully expecting
this year's to be the worst yet.

the company he works for operates a flat-rate PRP scheme, so that
everyone from the cleaner to the CEO gets the same percentage bonus.
One of the advantages for working for a Buddhist, I guess.

it's not a given, it's a PRP thing, but that's what it was last year
(I think it was "only" 96% the year before). Also, for the first 3
years you "only" get a 25%/50%/75% share of the overall bonus rate.
**** me, if I don't get at least twice that, I'll be on the blower to
    my agent ;-)

What is this 'bonus' of which you speak?

Thing is I don't think I'm "poor people" at all.

  13. But it's not the house that governs the price, it's the land. When
I was buying in Sydney in 1980 it was noticeable that vacant blocks were
consistently $35K less than established houses in the same area. The cost
of building a new house was somewhere in the 30s, IIRC.

  17. :-/ Unfortunately I didn't make anything like parity in the
switch. Indeed, I lost 45% and have then been sat at the top of the RA
scale for most of the time I've been here; just got a promotion to RF2 in
October. So at this rate I might make CHF100K again by the time I
    retire...

No different now. My house is worth around 220k. The re-build cost
on the buildings insurance is 80k.

  20. Which is why I'm coming around to the theory of not aiming to retire
early, but actually do the things one might save until retirement sooner
rather than later. Why do I want to wait until I'm old to have fun?
