I'm getting cramp in my right shoulder due, I think, to excessive mouse use.

A trackball seems indicated. Does anyone have any hard evidence in
favour of either the thumb type:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Tr...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1244480235&sr=8-2

    or a finger type:

    TIA

In true ukrm 'recommend what you have' mode, I recommend the former. I
suffered from RSI in the shoulder and switching to a Logitech Trackman
Wheel cured it in a week. It took a bit of getting used to but now I
wouldn't go back to a mouse.

Can't comment on those but someone in the office has one of these (first
    item on page):-

    http://www.computingplus.co.uk/mice.htm

It was recommended after a wrist injury rather than anything to do with RSI
but I mention it in case you'd never seen such a device before.

I know, luckily for me, I'm considered disabled enough to have had the
council buy it for me. Couldn't use a computer for very long without
    these gadgets.

If I'd had the money to get them for myself, I would have.. because of
the pain of going without them.

the office desk I use has a slidey out pen tray that performs the same
function for me. The wooden surround is in just the right place to support
my elbow and I use a cheap mouse mat with a wrist support.

My wrist based RSI has gone.
Desk cost £0 as it was being thrown out. Mouse mat cost about £3.

When that happens I use my left hand for a week or two (fnar). You
    soon get used to it.

I started getting a lot of elbow and shoulder pain some years ago, not
caused, but certainly exacerbated, by excessive mouse use. I found a
remarkably simple solution which works well to this day. Use the left
    hand for the mouse.

My arm support moves around letting me move my arm about without the
weight of my arm upsetting my shoulder. I'm glad for having a moving
rest today, my right shoulder has decided it's time to hurt today[1].
    Good news!
    Not bad. :)

[1] As well as the skin on my feet, my right hip, the fingers on my left
hand and my right ankle. Tomorrow, it'll be different I may even get my
old favourite (not) heart failure along with a whole other set of
    painful bits and bobs.

A lot of problems with mouse work stem from people not using their whole
arm. They tend to hold the arm ridged and only move fingers or the
wrist, thus overloading that part. The pain then travels as each part
    starts getting inflammation.

I'm sure you're right. I know that I do everything wrong, according to
the ergonomics people who come and advise us on desk/chair/computer
placement every fwe years. But **** 'em, I know what works for me.

If anybody suffers from problems caused by 'mouse work' they need to
try doing a proper days work where a broken bone or two means an
afternoon off work because you only get paid when you're working.

I'm sorry if this offends the limp wristed brigade but there are a lot
of people out there working stupidly long hours and ignoring seemingly
minor injuries because they don't get full sick pay when they're not
working and you use the words "problems from mouse work"? Don't make
    me fucking laugh.

Use the mouse less and drive using the keyboard and command line, then.
It's what I've done since mice became ubiquitous. It's surprising how
much quicker many tasks can be accomplished by not using the mouse.

Well try again then. I can't accept that it's not possible, with just
a little training, to get used to using the left hand instead of the
right. Do you type, ride one drive one-handed?
