If I sell something in europe, then they don't have to pay any VAT or
import charges because I am selling less than £58k of stuff per year,
nice and easy. However if I sell to the states, will my customers have
to pay import duty, as the product is vat exempt....

Also something I noticed, everything Ive ever ordered from america has a
label on the outside stating the value, this has always been bollocks,
eg, my $3000 laptop was labelled as $100 value and my $100 DVDs were
labelled as $4. Is this the accepted norm? can you get in trouble?....

The main problem is if it goes missing in transit and you have declared a
much lower value then that is going to be all you can claim for.

This is a good guide, with the right links at the bottom.

Well if thats the main problem then its not a problem. The physical
value is only ~£2. So, is it safe...ish to go ahead and only state its
value to replace it? That would certainly explain why my imported dvds
    were listed so cheaply.

In other words I need to find if I must use the retail value, or the
    cost of a replacement.

I've taken a look through the ebay links JC provided, but the ebay page
says nothing useful, and the 2 useful links at the bottom are broken.
Seaching through the sites for the potentially useful pages gives dozens
    of cryptically named pdf files.

Yes. It doesn't quite work as well when selling to the USA. I've sent
a lot of stuff to the US and they've always been fairly fussy even
    more so since Sep11.
