Can anyone suggest, from actual experience, a pc microphone good enough to
sit on a large table surrounded by 8 people which will work well with Skype
    conferencing.

I've tried a Prosound USB Podcast mic and a Blue Snowball USB mic. Both fine
bits of kit. Shite for the porpoise.

I was trying to avoid something with an internal battery but am realising
this may not be easy (for an analogue item).

Currently the mic in my logitech webcam does better than anything so far.

I was thinking of trying this next:

AFAICT all the integrated USB and Skype Conference phones are shit. Hence I
wanted to use the PC sound and a proper mic.

    *ahem*

Make sure whatever you get is 'Skype Certified'.

srlsy. In case you didn't know I work for them now.

I know the audio team pretty well, they know their stuff - the sound
    quality of eg this
    http://shop.skype.com/intl/en-gb/phones/yamaha-usb-microphone-speaker-psg-01s.html
    is amazing.

The ideal is to have a mic near each person and an auto switching
device, but that can get a bit pricey.

    No I didn't know.
I looked at that, don't care what it costs. Not quite right though.
Have a PC sitting here which plays R2 & 4 in the daytime with a small 2.1
sound setup. I've set up skype to autoanswer on this pc. I want a mic that
can sit in the middle of the room and do the needful, as well as serving in
    our meeting room.

Ah splendid, could you get them to fix the Linux version[1]? Twice now
I've had it drop the recording level down to nothing, so the person on the
other end doesn't hear anything. Of course, these incidents were months
apart, so the second time this happened, I couldn't remember what the
    solution was the first time.

[1] No, I really don't want to run Windows.

Umm, err, dunno. I'll check later.

I didn't expect you to respond. Not sensibly anyway.

As long as more and more people use it (and they are), then I'm happy.
Most times I'll probably suggest people contact our support - it's got a
    lot better recently.

  15. I'd use it a lot more often if it didn't eat so much resource and make
    my MBP run so hot.
