The suggestion is: Try running ldd on the Skype binary and look for "not
found" lines. Perhaps some paths are wrong.

options > sound devices > uncheck the box that alows skype to mess up
    your settings.

    How about pulse audio support?

Yes, I think you may be right there - I used to recommend Audio
Technica ATR97 boundary microphones for that sort of thing, which of
course need an internal LR44 battery. Of course I'm a bit out of the
game these days, so others may know better.

This says it works with skype via bluetooth on the PC.
    List $450.

Should work pretty well for that??

I don't think I have used a polycom conference phone
but seems a decent place to start.

It worked for me last night. This is on Ubuntu 9.10.

You could try a Skype ATA adapter with a proper Polycomm Soundstation 2
    conference phone.

Zoom 5900 USB Phone Adaptor for Skype

Dlink DPH-50U Skype USB Phone Adapter with PSTN Line Port.

    RapidBox (maybe US only)
    http://www.rapidvoip.com/products.html

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Polycom-Soundstation-2-Conference-Phone/dp/B0007M69QU

I've not tried it with Skype but I've got one connected to our Trixbox
PBX through a Linksys PAPT2 SIP adapter which works well.

ICBW, but I think if you use those type of boxes you don't get any of
the quality (super wideband) benefits when making a Skype-Skype call. If
you are calling out to people on pstn lines etc. they're probably fine.

  12. Ah. I was trying with 8.04 (very stable). I'll try it on the netbook that
has 9.10 (unstable, in my opinion).

Well, it kind of works. Out of the box, my recorded test call was just a
loud hiss. Pissed about with all the adjustments and nothing. Disabled
"Let Skype **** about with your settings" option, played with setting for
another ten minutes, and now it works as before. I was hoping to get it
working on this 8.04 box, but the old one won't work with the Logitech
camera (even though MSN works ok with it) and the new one won't install.

    Ah well. Thanks anyway.

  13. No executable, as it won't install. All I have is the deb. Hang on, I'll
see if I can extract the executable manually.

  14. "libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 (0xb7ef0000)"

One thing, that file is just a link to libasound.so.2.0.0.

    Would that be a problem?

Apparently not. Ping me on Skype, you should be able to find me, using
some clues from my reply address.

Yeah, 9.10 is a little disappointing with a number of small but niggly
faults with it. I wouldn't advise anyone to upgrade to it. 9.04 seems
    the best so far.
Do you mean that your webcam works with the new beta2, on 9.10 ? I'm not
sure why anyone would actually want to see my face, but my mum keeps
nagging me to get a webcam.
    NP.

Na, the symlink will automatically be resolved. Links are done properly
in UNIX. Check that the thing being linked to is there though.

You can also do 'ls -lL /usr/lib/libasound.so.2', where the big L tells
the lister to look at the linked-to file rather than the link itself.

IKWYM, but it's still worth it imho.

Firefox 3.5 instead of 3.0, OpenOffice 3.1 instead of 3.0, much better
power management on this laptop - whole stack of "little things" that all
add up to more than compensate for a few niggles. 10.04 is going to be
LTS, so shouldn't be quite such a radical step.

  20. No. The 9.10 is on another machine. This machine has 8.04 and a Logitech
webcam that doesn't work with Skype beta1. Beta2 won't install. The
webcam works fine in MSM messenger on this machine, so I assume the
    camera's good.

Simon's currently looking into the beta2 problem.
