I'd imagine it to be quite dark in there. And sort of ... moist.

We have a Polycom permanently sited in another meeting room upstairs. The
cost of their stuff makes me shit. Hence I wanted *just* to find a decent
Conf microphone. Also I just want to use the PC not an external unit/pad.

I tried a Yoga boundary condenser mic today. It has an internal battery. I
thought it looked promising. It isn't. Most mics are not designed to work
with PC's I guess and if they are (usb) for input into a software studio
product, otherwise there is insufficient line amp.

Bet they've not got it wired in tight enough that you couldn't borrow it.
A Proper pc based conference microphone will crap on your credit card too.
Philips 9172 Boundary Layer Conference Microphone will plug into a
    normal PC 3.5mm jack.

I'd rather spend the £300 on the Polycomm Soundstation, it does what it
says on the tin. Although it looks like you might have a solution for
£3.99 or £29.99 which is clearly much better ;-) .

The adapters still need your PC. Might be tempted to fork out £35 to
try one of the Skype telephone adapters myself and let you know how it goes.
    Multimedia Boundary Microphone HW74R

Claims to work without a battery so definitely worth a shot, especially
    at £3.99.

Supposedly Electret work best with PC sound cards so the Electret
Boundary microphone BE90X you mentioned previously looks like it might
    be worth a look too.

Can you let us know which one works the best please ?

Heh I got one of those first with a bunch of other toys from Maplin. It was
so pathetic I stamped on it and threw it in the bin.
The internal (digital) Mic on my 2nd desk PC, the Asus touch screen, is so
good I discovered last night I may let it go at that.

Have you any idea how bad it makes me feel being responsible for starting a
thread that turned into a Linux discussion.

/me doubts it's really that good.

I used the Chat 60 on a call this morning, admittedly just me, but it
    was pretty darn good.

The Asus has a good built in sound system and it is actually working
    amazingly well.

The larger Chat 150 as it is now wasn't easily available in the UK so I've
just ordered a Polycom C100S for Monday delivery. That should keep me amused
    until Wednesday.

OK so the Polycom C100S arrived this morning and was pressed into service
for a couple of calls today. With it lying flat on the desk divider the
call quality is great at 1m from both sides and the front and fair from 3m
away. 3 of us around a table were clear and background noise free to other
    locations.

The speaker is also fine for listening to R4/2 during the day.

    Recommended.

Skype should have it in their Shop....
