    Leaving at around 6am, am I best going M4 / M25 / A1M or M4 / Witney /
    Bicester / Milton Keynes?

    I favour the latter, 'cos I'd be hitting the M25 from the M4 to the A1M
    around the rush hour.

    FWIW the G/F prefers M4 -> (A???) -> M50 -> M42 -> M6 -> A14, but this
    is mostly because the M4 route is as boring as ****. About six hours
    including a couple of stops from Haverfordwest to Newmarket.

    I've got no idea about the far away parts of the journey, but if
    you're picking between the A428 from MK to St. Neots and the A14/A1
    bit at the end then the A14 will be considerably nicer.

    Why are you coming to this part of the world anyhow ? Have you been
    bad or something ?

    A449 becomes A40 north of Raglan[1] and you missed out the M5 after the M50

    [1] although an i449 must run in parallel as the A449 resumes at M50J4

    Indeed it does. I was thinking more in terms of roads to look for when
    route-finding.
    The road that goes from Raglan to the M50 at Ross is marked as A40 on some
    maps and A449 on others. I know my satnav disagrees with the road numbers
    on the signage on that stretch, but I can't remember which way round they
    disagree, IYSWIM.
