I've got a ratty Amilo Laptop [XP] belonging to a member of staff which
    isn't very well.

My main issue at this stage is that the system restore panel, along
with a few others, opens but is blank or empty.

    Cures?

    TIA

    Linux Mint.

hahah. Seriously, did anyone ever create a System Restore point? If
not, backing up the data, re-formating the HD and re-installing the OS
    is your best bet.

  4. Is system restore actually enabled , has it been switched 'off' in the system
admin files (you can find this in the control panel) , its not unkown for some
viri to do this or some ham fisted operator .

System restore is indeed switched on. Virus' have recently been removed
and I believe this is where the trouble started.

I have a briliant tool for this. I'll stick it on the UKRM GMail drive
so you can download and burn it to CD, then boot with the CD. It'll
allow you to do a System Restore without having to mess around booting
    up Windows.

  7. If you go into the admin tools in control panel and click on services you will
get a list of operations it will identify whats started whats disabled and
wether the programme is started manually or automatically

search out system restore and associated files and make sure they are set to
start automatically keep a note of what you change

If you have an xp disc boot from it and click the repair option

Microsoft tech pages may well give you infomation on how to correct the problem

All else fails , format and reinstal

IIRC, if you throw an XP installation cd in the drive and boot from there,
you get a "repair" option. I think it saved me some hassle (see: full
reinstall) more than once in the past, but I can't remember whether
    a) The product key had to be re-entered
    b) All added programmes remained functional (I think a couple didn't)

    on.

If that fails[1], Derek could always bung Linux Mint on it instead.
