I have an XL Live IQ and I'd like to connect it to a PC and construct
routes with various waypoints and save them to the unit. I thought the
Route Planner on their website would handle this. It's shit, doesn't offer
waypoints, and AFAICT doesn't save a route to the unit anyway.

Is there a way or additional PC software that will enable this?

    Use google maps.

Then paste the link into this page and you can download a .itn file
which you put in the itn/ directory on the TomTom:

I like the way he comes across as Sir.Tony's French brother.

When I was planning for the Alps run I used Tyre, which hooks in to the
TomTom software and uses Google Maps as a backend. It's a glorified POI
editor that allows you to plot POIs on a map and export them as an
itinerary file. A bit like the other thing someone mentioned but a bit
    more integrated.

One limitation of the TomTom (or, at least, the versions I've used) is
that if you set up an itinerary it assumes you're going to stop at each
one, rather than use them as waypoints while on the move. So you'll need
to tell it to move to the next destination on the itinerary each time.
Bit of a PITA, but not the end of the world.

The .itn files are basically just a list of lat/long/name, one per line:
so there's not really a huge number of ways in which it could go wrong.

    It's all documented here:
    http://www.tomtom.com/lib/doc/TomTomTips/index.html?itinerary_as_text_file.htm

FWIW you could potentially solve Ogden's problem by fiddling with the
"flag" field. I mean his tomtom problem, not the other ones.

Ah, but is there a free way of doing it? I tried the other week to
convert a gmaps route, for which I got a GPX file, I then uploaded it to
the Garmin, which was completely disinterested. Clearly uploaded to the
wrong area, but it's clearly not fool-proof.

I take Michelin maps as insurance and occasional aids as nothing gives you
an overview of an area like a 1:200000 map.

Satnav is handy but on the recent trip, the only time I asked it to find
somewhere was about 30km from Bruce's. I asked it to find petrol in
Mulhouse and the 1st two I came to were no longer trading: one derelict and
    the other redeveloped.

Speaking as a long time Bandit 1200 owner, that would have had me
walking. 100 miles to reserve means any chance of fuel from 80 miles
    onwards ... we're in there.

Well, this was in the centre of Mulhouse, so you would've been alright. It
seems city centre stations have gone and you need to go to the 'burbs to
find a hypermarché. Not unlike here, I suppose with the added economic
effect of CH a few km away with petrol at 90p a litre.

similar price in Lux, plus they don't want any road tolls or vignettes.
Never went there before this year and they have some excellent roads in
    the Ardennnes corner, at least

Generally slightly cheaper in Luxembourg, in fact. But 90p a litre
doesn't really do it justice, as it's tainted by the rather odd
current exchange rates. I work on a slightly more balanced equivalent
of about 2 Francs to the pound, and as 95ron is currently chf1.60 that
makes it around 80 pence in my reckoning.
