FOAK: Touchscreens and software

    Hi,

Just had a request come in to look into doing a wonderful display
where the centrepiece is an iPad. People go up, stick their details
in, get a photo taken then it all gets shared by wifi/bluetooth and
    posted out onto random photoframes.

My suggestion is that the iPad is likely the worst choice, as it
doesn't have a camera, doesn't multitask and probably difficult to
lock down for general public usage. People will just push the button
at the bottom and then start viewing tube8 ...

So, any FOAK recommend a solution that can run a touchscreen, camera,
bespoke software and then act as a controller to display on these
photoframes? What's the most appropriate language/software etc to be
    used?

And, is this actually a better way?

    Ta

Dunno, but a mate was telling me about Specsavers (I think) where they've
a touch screen with a camera. You try on glasses, take a snap and it
stores it. You try another pair, take another photo and compare them.
    This was before the ipad.

End result is likely to be that they reckon you're rubbish for not
getting it to run on an iPad because that's the whizzy image they have
    in their heads.
Use a PC running XP in kiosk mode, do your best to hide the hardware
away in a stand or something, and develop in whatever you have most
    experience in.

Probably a webcam isn't going to take pictures of decent enough quality
though: you want to find a camera that supports a tethered shooting mode
under software control and I think they're all proprietary to different
    manufacturers.

That's useful, thanks. Mainly I am writing web sites - PHP & the like
    - and I guess this probably wouldn't be the best to write in to have a
connection to the camera. Things that spring to mind are C++, Java
etc ... is that right? They would hook into other systems better?

    Thanks

Actually some of the more recent webcams are not bad (eg Logitech C910,

I've been using an HP TX25xx tablet PC for over a year. It just went
11,000+ miles in my tankbag, some of it pretty rough roads, and it
    worked fine.
