    Hi,

Is there any sort of ID that you can get within a week that would be
valid for flying to an EU country?
Don't ask how someone could suddenly discover that she never had a
    passport....

    yes, its called a passport.

Go and sit inside the passport office.

I believe the process can be done in 48hrs (or used to)

Not any more. New applications take six weeks.
Only renewals can be done by visiting the passport office.
    Security. Think of the children!

    That's progress for you.

Ask the airline if they will accept anything else like a drivers licence.

  6. Without a passport, she won't fly.

Arrange alternative travel. Rail just needs some sort of valid picture
ID. Road - I've managed to get across the Channel, and under it, by just
pretending to scrabble through my pockets and then being waved through
    by a bored Frenchman.

Getting back is easy. "Hello, Brit immigation man. No, no passport, the
French just let me through on my driving licence/Blockbuster
    card/whatever.

When <ahem> A Good Friend Of Mine </ahem> thought he'd lost his passport
whilst doing the last bits of packing for a trip to Seville last year,
and phoned the passport office to ask that exact question, "he" was told
that it was passport or stay at home.

Fortunately, it was found - ten minutes before the taxi to the airport
    arrived...
