FOAK: Unemployment benefit

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Mar 31, 2005.

  1. What's one entitled to, apart from the Jobseeker's allowance?

I mean, everything - you know, free teeth, dental care, specs, council
    tax rebate, etc?

There's 2 kinds of allowance, one contribution based which isn't means
tested and one that is means tested and opens doors to a wider range of
benefits if said person or their partner is skint.

FrJ will be along in a minute to explain this better.

From what I've seen, having looked at the forms with Katie (she claimed
for a whole 2 weeks between jobs) you get the basic Jobseeker's
allowance of something like £70 / fortnight and nothing else. The time
you're allowed to claim for seems to be based entirely on your previous
    NI contributions.

I'm by no means the FOAK on this one, but it seems to be a very simple
system - you pay in and they give you a bit back between jobs.

(I'm intrigued by this question coming from you.....)

  8. A recent bout of unemployment had me on <fx: checks oanda.com> £1,069
monthly, but i) it's calculated on previous wages, and ii) it's taxeable.

Council tax rebate's a definite, don't know about the rest. I suspect
it varies depending on things like if you're married/have kids etc.

I don't think you can get a council tax rebate, but I think you can
get the basic dental and eyewear from the NHS. You can also claim
back a pittance for traveling to jobs, but you have to claim _before_
    the interview.

You could also enter a claim for Income Support. Housing Benefit is
only paid if you rent or have a council house. Probably ****-loads
more money if you have kids.

As a white, 'single', middle-class white person with no kids, I got 55
quid a week late last year.

And the cheeky cunts want it back from my Employment Tribunal
    settlement.

That'll be the Jobseeker's Allowance, as in "apart from the Jobseeker's
    allowance", yes?

    :p

If TOG's entitled to that then "The Sun" would like to hear from him.
And he's probably not getting that one either.
