FOAK: valuer needed

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Dec 30, 2008.

  1. Someone who can run an eye over the contents of The Doctor's Ma's gaff
    for the estate valuation.

A 'sympathetic' approach would be handy, IYSWIM.

    Suggestions?

  2. Nah. Near Tunbridge Wells, although if his travel costs aren't
    massive...

I assume you mean "below the IT threshold".

When my dad died we got a local estate agent in to value the property. We
fed him a load of lies to say that we would put the property on the market
with him. We got a free probate valuation on his headed notepaper at an
agreeable price which satisfied the IR bods. We didn't worry about the
contents as he was not a collector of expensive items.

If the house is full of antiques then you need someone recognised by one of
the trade bodies. Where is the house located as someone might know a local
    specialist?

  5. Ah, um, this isn't a house valuation, but as the original posting said,
    the contents.

  6. Near Tunbridge Wells. It's not stuffed with antiques, but there is a lot
of Chinese and Far Eastern stuff in it, so quite specialist.

    <rummages down back of sofa>

Half a packet of Fruit Pastilles and a couple of (probably dead) AAA
    batteries?

You've got batteries down the back of your sofa? Are you *mad*? The fire
    risk man, the fire risk!

    Just ask Christofire[1]!

[1] Where the **** is he, anyway? Did he get a leave pass?

Auctioneer. We used Yellow Pages to find an auctioneer who did
valuations and who, when we visited his place, seemed busy and
competent. He spent a couple of hours going round my late mother's
house and a day or two later sent us a comprehensive written report
for the valuation. We put most of the contents through his auction
house in the end, and his valuations were pretty much spot on.

We just used best-guess figures for my dad's probate. Was a hell of a
lot easier than I thought, doing it all myself.

Seconded - when dealing with Granny Buzby's estate (left the building
at 102.5 years) the tax office were extremely helpful and gave very
clear and fair guidance as to what to do. Tne only fly in the ointment
was the bank and the solicitor who we fired. Oddly enoug things moved
    very quickly after that.

Remove any stuff from the house into 'safe' keeping - security issues
with empty houses you know ;-)

    Oh then have a bit of a selective memory failure . . . . . .

I'm pretty sure he's posted on the Tiger group more recently than on
here. Thing is, if he continued dieting at the rate he was, he could be
hiding down the front of your trousers now & you wouldn't even notice.
