It appears the bearings in the drum / motor have given up the ghost on
our 8 year old Zanussi (it has been good whilst it lasted, but I recall
Zanussi are no longer Zanussi these days)....

So, I need a new machine.

Any recommendations for brands or places to buy? - I'd love a Miele, but
at nearly 600 quid for a basic one, I think that's probably not going to
happen - I've bought cheaper cars, ffs.

Kind of thinking Bosch, then - but are they as good as they're meant to
    be?

We have one, faultless & not silly money. In fact, we swapped all outr
kitchen appliances apart from the fridge to Bosch through natural
wastage over a three year period. Five years later, not a single issue.

We got a Bosch last year to replace the POS Hotpoint we had. So far it's
    been faultless.

We have a Bosch dryer which has been great - any opinions on Siemens? -
they come with a 5 year guarantee at the moment and don't look silly
    money.

  5. I've had this current Bosch um... 4 years now. Not a problem with it,
which is good going for a w/m here, with the amount of shit getting
thrown into it and the useage pattern it gets.

We've got a Bosch "ClassicXX" and it's never caused a moment of grief in all
the time we've had it and that's a few years now (about 5 IIRC)

Stay away from the Dyson washing machines. We've had one here for
years and something has gone wrong in an expensive way at least every
4 months. Extended warantee is up now. To fix a broken drawer they
    charged us £96

They are usually easy to replace and standard ball races available at most
bearing stockists. 6203-2rs in our Zanussi IIRC.
Take the back orf and check them out as they are usually under a tenner why
    not replace them?

Along with all the other posts, I've no complaints with the Bosch stuff
I've bought; including a washing machine which has performed faultlessly
    over about four years.

We held the same view- I wouldn't say we necessarily agreed on
    something.

Bosch and Siemens kit are both, afaik, made by BSH (Bosch & Siemens
Household) [1], so it's basically the same kit. Certainly both used to
turn up on the employee discount lists at SBS, which made me wonder.

A 5 year warranty's hard to argue with, but won't JLP offer that as
    standard on just about everything?

Had serious problems with *every* Hoover appliance I have owned. Zanussi
washing machines don't have the premium reputation of Bosch etc, but have
lasted us years and been bulletproof. The last one lasted about 12 years
and gave no trouble until it died of old age. Bosch dishwasher lasted 10
and has been replaced with another Bosch.

  20. Silly thought, but Haynes does BoLs for washing machines now. If all
that's gone are the bearings, it might be worth having a go at a DIY
fix. Certainly cheaper, and if you can't fix it, you're not down a load
    of cash.

And think how impressed Katie would be. You'd get a shag, for certain.
