Well, my last hoover machine did 15 years in my posession... and it
was 5 years old, when I bought it..

My bruv's indesit has done 17 years.

    So, err you've been unlucky...

Erm, well.... I've looked into this. Not only would I have to diagnose
*which* bearings it needs - there are 4 sets in there, they're also not
cheap at nearly 30 quid each, plus it also leaks water from the front
seal, so that'll need doing, too, plus I'd need the right tool for the
job - I believe a bearing puller is needed.

All-in I reckon I could easily clear 100 quid 'having a go' without
    actually fixing it.

Besides, it's getting on a bit now and my bonus was paid last week, so I
feel like buying new rather than patching up something that's done 3
house moves with us and has seen better days.

  3. Not really. Hoover spent years building a good reputation for their
goods then destroyed it in one round the board cost cutting exercise.

No they are probably still crap.

Or you've been lucky. Four Hoover appliances (2 x vacuums, 2 x washing
machines), all lasted between 12 and 24 months before uneconomic to repair.
Says a lot for my optimism (mother had a hoover for 5 million years in the
50s, ect ect) but not a lot for Hoover in the 80s.

Silly thought, but Haynes does BoLs for washing machines now. If all
that's gone are the bearings, it might be worth having a go at a DIY
fix. Certainly cheaper, and if you can't fix it, you're not down a load
    of cash.

And think how impressed Katie would be. You'd get a shag, for certain.[/QUOTE]

I think it may take more than the ability to change a bearing to
impress her. They've been married for quite a while so she should know
    him pretty well by now.

I've got all Siemens kit - fridge, washer, dishwasher, oven, hob etc.
All excellent and never had a problem. I won't have anything else now.

as has been said its very closely related to Bosch.

Thanks for all the suggestions..... I finally decided to spend 'how
fucking much!?' on a Miele Premier thingie. Buid quality is superb and
it's backed up with a 10 year warranty.
