Anyne know of any decent, ideally free, packages?

I can run it on machines at different sites so they can keep an eye on each
    other.

Ideally, Id like something that can send me an sms if something goes down,
but really all thats needed is a web page that says "Sites a,b,c,d and e are
up, site f down for past 10 minutes"

If theres nothing that will do the job for free, cheap is good..

Used this on a trial seemed to work very well, but starts at £20/month
    for a limited service.

    http://www.watchmouse.com

    Free trial for a month.

I just set up a Nagios system on one of our servers. It's a bit of a
pig, but when you get your head round it (as I have) it's pretty damn
cool. It can test services remotely as well as accept reports from
remote clients on things like disk space. If you want to give it a try,
I'd be happy to help with config.

To get sms I use www.sms2email.com which works but does cost £6+VAT for
    50 sms

Other than that, it does exactly what you want. If you don't want to
mess around, mail me with the details of what you want monitored, plus
your mobile number and I'll set my Nagios box up to do it, in return for
a contrib to the sms fees.
