A 6mm neoprene wetsuit at a depth of 10m has about the same thermal
protection as a 3mm one at the surface.

Get the bike nicked and dumped locally(make sure the scrotes are under

That insight has put a completely different angle on it for me and I
    appreciate the collective knowledge.
I thought to some degree it could be a relatively year round thing with the
right kit - but the right kit in this case might be bloody expensive, and it
    still sounds unpleasant and/or dangerous.
I think I will get some seasonal kit in preparation but I will leave my
interest on it until the warmer climate well into next year, perhaps some
    time around July/August again.
Waiting on global warming any use?

Heres another question open to the FOAK: What are the optimum times of the
year for sea temperature for surfing ?
By the sounds of it, anytime from now up until the start of summer may be
unbearable to unpleasant, but then the sea might remain still relatively
cold until October-ish which may be the peak opportunity to surf - is this
    right?
If I aimed to go surf at the most reasonable range of date when would this
be - June to October ?

Damn, 4 days ago. I was working anyway. Just another 361 days or roughly
    thereabouts to go then ?

Get a c-skins suit and buy it in a proper surf shop, the right size is
essential. C-skins are english made suits, very durable and made for the
    english climate.

    Cost approx £200.

    Like wot you guessed below.
Now the water is actually quite pleasant. Unfortunately the weather is
not with the usual gale force winds etc. Pick a calm day in October then
it's fine. November is OK too as the water isn't bad, but the air temp is
often colder, so you suffer for the 5-10 minutes it takes to get changed.
Exactly those months. April and May are OK, but the water can be bitter
in April but starts warming up by the day. Depending on the type of
Spring May can be nice or still cold. Of course, if you keep going
through the winter, then April and May are positively toasty.
