When I open a Windows Explorer pane like My Documents or My Computer
it's blank. Nothing on it at all :(

    Any suggestions[1]?

    In communiqué
Is an hourglass = 'I'm trying to find all those files' showing?

My (XP) box can be a bit slow these days the first time I open an
Explorer window. OK after that. I really must prune some of the unwanted
    folders and do a de-frag.

I had something similar a while back - in the end I started in safe
mode which gave me working screens and rolled it back a couple of days
    which fixed it.

which bit of "started in safe mode" did you not read? You *do* know
how to start Windows in safe mode, yeah?

But does it work in safe mode? (F8 on startup)

If explorer is broken then perhaps something that plugs into explorer
has broken - try removing your virus software, as a wild ass guess.

....but reinstall it afterwards, of course, I'm not saying it's safe for
you to run a computer without AV.

Interesting. Anything on your desktop? Start button and menu?

    Might be this problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192315

So try running regedit, delete the ExplorerBar value in
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

If you break your computer with regedit you get to keep the pieces.

I'm really struggling here and trying to avoid taking it to the local
workshop who are never in a hurry.

Feels like I've tried everything but nothing has helped.

It's also affected the folder icons in the Start menu. These show a
magnifying glass but do not open. I've tried updating the graphics
driver but this downloads a zip file ....which, when I open it ....
    the window is CUNTING BLANK!
