Ace was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
'cos even I haven't manage to break mine yet? But TBH I bought the
    industrial strength version.

I bet you've got a 10 year old Dyson & 5 year old iPod that have never
    failed too.

Seriously though there have been many threads about wireless
incompatibility when mixing makes, which is why I mentioned it, even
though I've never had a problem myself.

None of it you patronising ****. I've got a Linksys router, Dell
built-in wireless & a BT wireless card, all of which work perfectly
together. However there have been many threads about compatibility
problems between different manufacturers kit, which is why I mentioned
it, especially considering Ace's lack of techie knowledge.
Much like WHQL certified drivers *have* to work with Microsoft software
    then?

  4. It's a non-issue with anything made in the last 2 years. Trust me on
this. I tested a lot of kit when I was setting up the wireless network
here and they all (apart from one card that refused to work with
anything from Netgear and then emitted the Magic Smoke) worked
perfectly together with anything that adhered to the standard.
No.. they have to work with Windows. And for a product to carry the
11g/a/b logo an name they have to have gone through a fairly rigourous
    interoperability testing scheme.

But why would I need to use a setup wizard? Surely once I connect the
wireless router thingy to the modem it'll just work, won't it? And I
should be able to find and select the signal in the same way as I do
any other WiFi connection. What exactly is this setup program going to
    do?

    Indeed.
Mine says: ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router.

The setup was pretty easy, but made easier by hooking it up first via
    ethernet cable before going wireless.

The bit that foxes some people is getting your browser to see it. You
just type the internal IP address into the browser address window and up
    comes the router admin login.

If you are using IE though you may have to change the options on
Connection - LAN Settings to select 'automatically detect settings',
before you can see the router.

Then its just a case of entering your ADSL Protocol username and
password. IIRC the setup wizard just leads you through that without you
having to trawl the menus looking for were to enter the necessary
    settings.

Change the admin password and then set up the wireless side of things.

  7. No - not the router or access point - both need info that they can't
    get automagically.
The wireless cards themselves - yes they will work automatically. You
might have to type in a password first time you connect depending on
the config of the wireless router/AP
It sets up the DSL router or Wireless access point.

  8. I think we are talking about 2 different things - Ginge & I are talking
about the router/access point and you are talking about the wireless
    card in the laptop/PC.

    I had a D-Link router that wouldn't see a D-Link card but when I
changed the card to a Linksys one it worked fine.

There's magic in those things, and no mistake, and sometimes it just
    doesn't want to work properly.

and make sure you get one your ISP approves of - AOL are shocking for this

  11. There are at least 4 bits of info you need to give the router to
set up: user name & password for connecting to the ISP, and data to do
with the ADSL protocols used. IME the last two are hard to get -- I had to
troll through Orange's site for about 20 mins to find it, after I was
upgraded to 4 Mbps. The Netgear wizard automagically finds this for you
    by testing the line.

What else I've done is set the WLAN to only allow specified MAC
addresses to connect, set a non-default SSN (service name) and specified
that it not be broadcast (i.e. WiFi devices can see there's an AP, but
not what it's called, so they can't log on. I've not enabled any
encryption because my old Belkin 11b card and the SDIO WiFi/Flash
card for my PDA don't handle it, but the AP is off most of the time
anyhow as everything is patched into the router. :)

And of course changed the administrator password. Make sure you
pick a "good" one, as you can't change the account name; you can get back to
the default with a hard reset if you forget the p/w.

At some point I'll reduce the range of addresses the router hands out
on DHCP and set the non-mobile PCs to static addresses so I can set up
printer and file servers. And enable encryption since I now have an 11g
PCMCIA card and the PDA that went with the SDIO card was stolen...

Having read the thread so far no-one has mentioned using all wireless links.
If you use all wireless links and there is a problem with them *and* you
have a need to access the router, you're stuffed. To ease this problem, if
one computer is connected via cable, then any problem on the network can be
    sorted quite quickly.

    Yeah, got all that.
    Cheers, I think.

But the box i've been given is supposed to work without any sort of
setup - I guess it's already been done by our techies. So if I just
add on the wireless router to the existing box, that in itself
shouldn't need any additional configuration, right?

Aha ! Pre-configured, with no setup details supplied and an arcane admin
password. They really don't want you fiddling do they? You are going to
have to go with adding a Wireless Access Point then.

Have you actually been able to connect (via cable) yet ?

If everything is OK on the Internet side so to speak you just need to
setup your wireless network. Not an expert, but I suspect that it may
work straight out of the box with just the help of the XP wireless
    network setup wizard.

It might need "some".. without knowing what the box your techies have
provided is doing it's difficult to guess how much.. if the box your
techies have given you can already allocate out ip addresses for
multiple machines.. and all that kind of thing.. perhaps very little
configuration.. if they've not set that kind of thing up... then you'll
need to do a bit more.

This is a bit like looking at bike, on the other side of the road, and
being asked if the valve clearances are out. :)

More importantly, they don't require that users have to understand
anything. Which is exactly as it should be, in my book.
Ah. And will that just work without any extra configuration?
No. France Telecom are three days late connecting the ADSL line.
Should be in by tomorrow. But I'm assured that it will just work. I've
got a login and password to connect to the ISP, but that, apparently,
is all I need to do.
That's disabled, in favour of a package called Oddyssey, which I've
used on hotel, airport and other WiFi connections without any probs.
So hopefully should work with this one too.

Our Dyson is nearly ten years old and works ok. Fiona's iPod Nano only
plays up when I get impatient with Realplayer and unplug it when it's
    transferring.

iTunes sucks Lucifer's cock. Even 7.
