FOAK: XP won't load web pages.

I've installed XP Pro 64 on a separate disk, & can ping & tracert, but
not load any websites apart from Google. The network settings are
identical to those on my Win2k disk, which works fine.

I've tried disabling the firewall, & set the IE security level to low,
but still no joy. This is the first time I've played with XP so don't
know its foibles. Any suggestions on what's wrong?

Tried a different browser to see if it has the same issues?

Sounds like DNS. Have you tried putting an IP in the address bar?

    Try 217.12.3.11 (www.yahoo.co.uk) and 212.58.224.126 (www.bbc.co.uk)

I have now - just put Firefox on - same problem. Although I did
discover I can get to mozilla.com as well as Google.

Both - ADSL2MUE modem & WRT54GS router. The ISP's Bulldog. It all works
fine when I boot back to the Win2k drive so it seems unlikely the
    network hardware/ISP are the culprits.

I noticed you said this is first time you've played with XP. Just out of
interest, what did you use before?

I wasn't suggesting the ISP or hardware, I've just found from personal
experience that some need different setups depending on how you connect
and some ISPs are just shit. AOL being one. Do you know the IPs of
    Bulldogs DNS routers?

Win2k (which I'm back in now)
    Yep - 83.146.21.5 & 6. I've got them in the network settings (I don't
use DHCP - but I did try & it still didn't work).

I haven't used XP Pro 64. I'm just wondering if it has DNS issues. If I
think of anything else I'll pop back in.

    Krusty,

Let's go back to the basics (please don't think that I'm patronising in
any way here). Am I right in thinking that you are connected to an ADSL
router using Ethernet? If not are you using wireless or a USB connection? If
it is Ethernet, then you will have an IP address and subnet mask - you say
that you are not using DHCP, so you must have entered the address and mask
manually as well as the DNS settings. Also you will have entered the default
router (the IP address of the routers Ethernet port.

If all of these are correct, we'll do a little ping / tracert.

Open a command window from the XP start menu / run / type cmd.

Now ping the PC's IP address. Does it work?
Next ping the default router's address. Does it work?
If the above all work, try pinging the DNS servers. Do they respond?

    Now look at name resolving.

From the same command window above, type nslookup www.cisco.com do you get a
    response?

If all the above work, then we are looking at something above the IP
connectivity layer and we'll look at that later.

    J.

    Not at all old bean[1].
Yep. PC --> Broadband router --> ADSL2 Modem.
Yes to all of the above. 192.168.1.111 as IP, 255.255.255.0 subnet,
router IP as gateway, Bulldog DNS servers as primary & secondary DNS.
I haven't tried pinging the above, but will when I get a chance to have
another play. I did however ping & tracert a couple of places such as
www.sony.com, & they worked fine. However the websites wouldn't load
using either the domain or IP.

Big but - Google loads just fine, & I can search in web, groups &
froogle no problem. However clicking any of the resulting links fails
miserably. Mozilla.com also loads. Just to clarify, this is a brand
new, clean install of XP, on a newly formatted drive, so it can't be
picking up anything from a cache.
I'll add that to the list of things to try.
Okey doke - I'll let you know the results in a while.

    [1] You patronising **** ;-)

I take it it's a 'test' version on XP 64 ? maybe it's not the newest
release and has some 'bugs' still in it ?

  19. I bought 2 x Dell Precision 670's with XP Pro 64 last week.

They gave us such hassle eg many of our programmes wouldn't run and we
couldn't even log on to Google.

Dell said TOUGH - You bought it so you must live with it ! (Not in so many
words but that was their attitude)

The answer was to rip out the XP 64 and reinstall Win Pro 32
