FOAK - ZZR600 chain clunking/back wheel squirming about

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Miles Reading, Aug 28, 2008.

  1. Hello all

    Haven't posted here for ages!

    My zzr600 e3 has a problem with the back wheel/chain/something I dont
    know.

Basically in any gear if you let off the throttle and coast for a bit
say downhill, when you re-apply the power the chain clunks/snaps about
and the rear wheel squims - it is almost as if the chain goes slack
and when you re-apply the power it takes the slack back up instantly
    and the rear tyre squirms.

The problem started co-incidently after I got a new rear tyre fitted,
this being about 4 weeks into a new set of sprockets and a new chain.
I figured the tyre place must have put something back incorrectly so I
dismantled the rear wheel but everything was there and assembled
    correctly.

I have now put on another new chain, figuring the issue was with the
chain but the problem still persists, I have even tightened up the
slack so there is only 20mm of movement but still no progress.

Does anyone have any ideas - I cannot think what could is causing the
    issue.

    Cheers

Tyre pressures are spot on - its almost like the chain becomes loose
and then tighten up instantly under power - the tyre squirming is a
result of the chain jolting and giving it a hard kick.

    Cheers

  3. I checked the cush drive when I dismantled the rear and it looks fine
    - ie it is in 1 piece and not cracked or stress fractured or anything.

    Many thanks

Has the spindle been done up correctly?

Are all spacers present & correct?

If you grasp the rear wheel at the front (by the engine) & rear (by
the number plate) , can you wiggle it? Ditto vertically?

Can you wiggle the sprocket - does it move independently of the wheel
either in-out, flappy-wise[1] or rotationally-wise[2]? The last one
suggests that the rubbers were left out (I don't know ZZR600s so these
    might be built-in).

Any sign of chewing on components near the chain?

    Swingarm play?

Brake caliper torque rod done up correctly?

    [1][2] These are technical expressions.

    Something's gone back wrong.

What's the wheel alignment like when checked with a straightedge or sighted
by eye, ignoring any markings on the swingarm?

  7. Not really an issue if it's squirming.

A spacer is almost certainly missing.
