I wouldn't use spit to wet foam earplugs but I get the soft plastic
ones from work and I always do that before using them.

It's up to the individual to do whatever they're comfortable with and
I'd no more criticise a poster for saying they gob on their earplugs
than I would criticise them for doing 65 in a 60 limit. Having a pop
at someone for not giving a **** about personal hygiene regarding
earplugs is no different to having a go about wearing trainers when
riding their bike so **** the safety nazis.

    I Consider myself suitably chastised.

Although TBF I never actually suggested that they shouldn't do it,
just that it made me shudder at the thought, which is based on the
multiple ear infections I've had over the last few years.

    Awww, don't take it badly.
Obviously you're doing it wrong. Bit fat lumps of green phlegm are not
really ideal for lubricating earplugs unless you really want to glue
    them in for life.

Nowt wrong with trainers - providing you don't mind waiting four
months for your toes to heal.

I wet my little finger and stick that in my ear to lube up for foamy
entry, mainly because I don't like the idea of sucking on a earplug
that's already been stuck in my lughole for a few miles

You mean you can't lick your own earholes?

Ditto. I keep a spare set under the seat now.

From what I've read on the subject, not really. Active Noise Reduction on
motorcycle has one significant problem: it works best for low frequency
noise. And what kills your hearing on a bike is the high frequency wind
    noise.

If you want to splurge on hearing protection, get earphones with
    custom-moulded
passive noise blocking earplugs at your friendly audiologist. :)
I have isolating Creative C630 earphones, but I prefer foam earplugs.
    They're
definitively more effective, and listening to the music is distracting,
    anyway.

PS. There's a review of cheap Phillips noise-cancelling earphones at
    webbikeworld:
    http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/phillips-noise-canceling-earphones/
    Not terribly enthusiastic.
