Thanks for that too. I'll look it up, but I think getting what's left of
the thread clean enough to bond may be a problem.

Having met the bloke, he probably falls into the "I haven't got the
right size spanner so I'll undo all the ones this small one fits" mould.
I've seen the assortment of screws (not bolts) the fairing was held on
with, including a fuel tank bolted down tight without having to bother
    with those fiddly rubber mountings.

Kneeling next to the bike with it on the side stand, the bolt with the
dribble actually looks to be the lowest point on the engine.

Having said all that, I'm going to investigate the cost of a helicoil
kit as opposed to praying. I've cut threads in wood and metal before so
it's not a problem, I was just looking to avoid as much dismantling as
possible but I'm not going to rush it.

Aerosol brake cleaner up its chuff. That stuff comes with a little tube for
getting to those hard to access places.

You won't be able to do a repair with a helicoil kit while the
    crankcases are still bolted together.

You might find someone that says you can do the job but trust me,
you'll **** it up if you try. You'd struggle to find a way to get a
tap up through the clearance hole in the lower casing and if you
managed to do that you'd find it almost impossible to fit the insert
without fucking it up. The trouble with fitting wire inserts is that
if you cross thread the insert as you fit it and then try to fit a
bolt you'll lock the bolt into the insert and either snap it off
trying to remove it or rip yet another lump out of the crankcase
making it impossible to repair with a helicoil.

    Don't even go there...

  5. Fukkit, just Araldite the bolt in and flog the thing.

Araldite? I'd squirt silicone sealant up the hole and then wind the
bolt in. There's no way it'll move if you've got it jammed in with
    silicon.

Thanks for the warning. I'd already decided working through the hole
would lead to disaster, especially having looked at a few helicoil kits
    on the web.
