I had never heard of a Hang Drum before?? but the owner of Newcastle Drum

Isn't that a lovely sound? Would be great to hear one live.

I saw a guy playing one of these at Parc Guell in Barthelona.
I felt that it sounded rather like *refined* steel drums.
Although they make a beautiful sound, they're quite dynamically limited
and I'm not sure exactly how expressive you could be with one.
Maybe the guy playing the one I saw wasn't awesome enough to really make
it speak to me, but I felt it was more of an effect than a solo instrument.

The crazy band down the hill were way more fun.

A combination of New World music & Steel Drum music. Where's my toxic
    vomit gun.

I thought the ocarina is a round clay flute-like instrument?
This guy makes it a bit more interesting:

IIRC the inventor is Swiss, the name is simply the word for "hand" in
the particular dialect (again IIRC Bernese) spoken by the inventor.

    Sorry, I wasn't nit-picking, just remembering that I bought a few in
Covent garden many years ago, (when they were clay) and actually got a
    tune out of it :)
Agreed. Another Youtube clip shows some other inetersting effects -
sliding hands across it etc, so I think there are actually possibly a
wider range of sounds available, but I don't know if you can play
"between" the notes in order to get a full range?

For about 2 minutes. After that, I'd be waiting for the entertainment to
    arrive.

Doesn't sound quite right - hand is hand, and I've not yet encountered
anything in the way of consonant changing in the various dialects over
    here.

I used to work in the field, so to speak, and that was what the
accompanying documentation stated. The Gm version was perfect for the
Close Encounters sequence, and looked entirely appropriate. I will
fight to the death to defend my memory on this, but I must emphasise
the above. It's possible it reflects a verbal meaning rather than a
    noun.

    I wouldn't dispute anything you say, but... that's because I haven't a
clue what the **** you're on about. I thought I might be pissed, but
on reflection I wonder if you are. Or is it just another dialect I've
    not come across yet?

It's a few years ago, but I stand by my memory. The inventor named
the instrument after the Bernese word for "hand". Wikipedia agrees
with me, although I accept that Wikipedia isn't necessarily the most
    reliable of sources.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hang_(instrument)

It's not my fault if the above line is not rendered as a single URL.

    http://www.hang-music.com/hang.php

    That should also help.

I should add, I have first-hand (no pun intended) experience of these
    instruments.

He uses one different technique that I can see - damping with the heel
of the hand to make a 'dead' sound instead of letting the harmonics
ring out. Otherwise. it's just added electronics, which make it sound
similar to a steelpan. I prefer the first version. Anyway, 'contact
    mic's' FFS.
