    No, not angle grinders.

    *Bench* grinders. Cheap.

Aldi are selling them, GBP11.99 for a 200W grinder, comes with one fine
and one coarse wheel. Seems like a bargain to me, and should be good
    enough for my purposes.

They're also flogging pairs of extra wheels for GBP2.99.

Now, what needs sharpening? All my knives, scissors, the mower blade,
axe... ummm... pizza cutter... damn, there must be other stuff...

Can you stick a polishing wheel on those things ?
My pipe has moulded Sidi boot rubber on it from my heel
I'd rather like to get it off and I think a grinding wheel may be slightly
    too abrasive

You'd be much better off with a power drill attachment-type selection
of polishing mops and compounds, like this:
    http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=22995&src=froogle

I have a similar kit and use the drill either hand-held or mounted in
a Workmate depending on the size and accessibility of the item. The
coarse mop and compound remove "Not For Road Use" markings
effectively, the finer mops polish metal to a fine lustre. As used in
the production of the Champion-105 exhaust hanger, as it happens.

    Hardly cutting-edge, was it?

Post a link to the photos showing the 'incident' when you change the
    wheel for the first time.

    Safety nazi.

My grinders wheel is horrendously worn at an angle to one side at the
moment. I had to grind down a CrMo socket into 4 prongs to get the
'special nut' off the honda clutch basket.

Hmm, cheap wheel dresser on cheap wheel ...

    Hey, I'm all for Darwinism.
I wouldn't mount any wheel without balancing it but cheap shit can't
be balanced. Dressing doesn't balance a wheel, it might true up the
face but they're still out of balance which means you risk it
exploding every time you start the fucker up.
