  1. Clostermann's epic The Big Show has been re-published, in its original
uncut form[1]. Plus a lot of new stuff.

    He's still alive! I didn't realise. Shame he's a Frog, mind.

[1] The original was published in the days of paper rationing and was
    heavily pruned.

That 24 cylinder engine sounds like this one a bit..

Except that this one is a 1/5 th scale model
http://www.enginehistory.org/eagle_22.htm although the real one didn't
    have a capacity of 370cc. :)

  3. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
    http://www.eagle.ca/~harry/aircraft/tempest/tbshow/checkout.htm

    Holy ****.

    http://www.eagle.ca/~harry/aircraft/tempest/tbshow/tempest.htm

    **** me.

    Ordered.
I just hope its better reproduced than this extract:
    http://www.flyandrive.com/cadremunsterland2.htm

I get the feeling that it was copied out of the book by a non-English
speaker. As is often the case with such things, some of the typos are
    quite amusing.

    Bloody good paintings though.

Thanks - ordered from Amazon. Only wanted that so did quite well to come
away with 4 books, 3 DVDs and a brace of CDs. And an imminent bollocking
    from SWMBO. Ho hum.

  8. It's an utterly brilliant book.

I've been reading, er, leafing through it at Waterstone's. It was pay
day today so I shall buy it tomorrow.....

I've seen the Eagle at shows, but never yet seen it run. I'd love to.

The sad thing is that it's always displayed fully assembled, which hides
    most of its beauty.

There's a *stunning* Gnome rotary that does the rounds of the shows too.

I was heavily pruned as a child, even now I still have a problem with
large stoned fruits! Incidentally, on the aircraft theme... yesterday
I saw a formation consisting of a Jet Provost, a Gnat (in 'arrows red)
and a Hunter all at low-level, Farnborough bound. They were preceeded
an hour earlier by some bloke in a parachute with a big fan on his
back... now that looked fun, dangerous but fun... We've seen a
wonderful selection of aircraft overflying us at work this week...

Yeah, just been 'listening again' to the PM bit on that. Sarf Effrikan
pub landlord who saw it: "Listen, if it was an American pilot, we're
lucky he could find England, no matter Farnborough".

Shame really, twenty hour round trip from home base, and a *HUGE*
bollocking when you get back. If I'd been his boss I'd have cancelled
the refuellers for the homeward leg.

I first read it in about 1967 and was completely enthralled. It was far
better IMHO than Reach for the Sky (Bader) and Fly for Your Life (Stanford
Tuck) and I am looking forward to reading it again.

Looks like I'll have to buy a model engineer mag and have a look in
    that.

I first read it in about 1974, and most recently a couple of months
ago. The dogeared paperback lurks on the shelves, but is brought out
for a glorious re-read every couple of years.

There are lots of books dealing with similar stuff, written by similar
people; Clostermann's is one of the very best.
