    One of the best, IMHO.
As a wanabee fledgling biker of the time
    (late '70s/early '80s), I used to read
his columns in various bike mags.

I was the same back in the mid-late 70s, when I was still at school.

He still writes a column in one of the bike trade mags, and most months
it's quite interesting to hear his POV on the trade and those people
    involved in it.

I still consider myself too young to read classic bike mags.
They haven't started covering eighties Japanese bikes yet have
    they?

    Well, founder really IIRC.

Oh, and he started Which Bike and Motorcycle International (also IIRC).

One of my favourite bike journalists ever, even though I suspect it was
his 'lifestyle' that appealed more than the content of his articles. On
reflection I think he was very influenced by Hunter S. Thompson.

Even so, he's one of the reasons that bikes became more than a way of
    transport for me.

    No, a motorcyclist.

I think this is where I'd use a smiley if I did them.

Is anyone else getting irritated by the sudden profusion of smileys in
    corporate email?

I'm such a corporate-whore that a part of me suggests I should use them
to integrate with others (mainly my Director...).

You know, the quite voice I should listen to that tells me to do the
expedient things that will move my career on rather than the strident
voice that tells me to be true to myself...
