forget hybrids.... maybe this is the future! http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1042252_cyclone-steam-engine-pushes-closer-to-land-speed-record "180 horsepower and peak torque of 850 pound-feet--at 1 rpm" mind you, you'd want to make sure you don't break anything, 1200degF could really bring harm to a young lad who was sitting on top of it... Agreed it looks fascinating won't happen though as being fuelled by anything but a monopoly is blocked at conception big oil is greedy
but it could be pulverised wood or home made alchohol or some other such renewable thing which cant be taxed
I used to operate a steam boiler for various steam operated machines and it took about three quarters of an hour to get up enough steam to start the smallest one
atec 77 blathered on with: If you're suggesting taxation on fuel might be disappeared, watch the arguments about deadly nasty steam explosions appear any time soon. Anything to stop reduction in the tax take. But it appears to me that they've removed concept "boiler" from the equation, which is an absolutely top notch idea indeed - mainly because of the results of boiler explosions as seen down through the years - not a good look. Besides, which drivers out there could be boiler attendant ticketed? The ones who prang every other week? IMHO, I believe we have a new motive force available for out vehicles that doesn't need a battery and can actually run an air-conditioner at the farking lights!! Can't see a hell of a lot Not to recommend the thing, at all. Even the start-up and condenser problems of conventional steam systems (see Saab, Rover et al) appear to have been booted out the door. The thing should just fire up and run pretty well as soon as it gets fuel - albeit with a little less power while the thermal tricks are getting their act into gear, so to speak. But de-ionized water? Better distilled stuff. Can't trust the water 'sellers' at the best of times
Testing the model steamer I built last year it takes about 3 minutes to be in go condidtion so I expect the car could be the same chip oil is hard to get though due to all the bio fuel people
Did you watch the two videos? this engine does not heat a great boiler full of water like the old ones it seems to heat water in a closed circuit like a sealed unit refrig unit, it has small pistons,it probably heats almost instantaneously Unless the whole thing is a con.
Yes I watched it , the slowst part is getting fireup which wont take long , certainly not more than minutes max as experience with the model suggests being of a closed loop type
200lbs engine weight is a little hefty - might want to build a smaller lighter model for a bike. With that sort of hp to torque ratio you'd be looking at gearing it really high and having very few gears (probably just a high/low range). Would be pretty cool to have one ;-) JL

Check www.jaylenosgarage.com for loads of videos on Jays steam vehicles. Short answer is they are a huge pain in the arse to get running for a quick drive to the shop. Fraser
This thing does not seem to be like existing steam engines so it can not be compared with every bodies notions of known engines.
