I've just changed the fork oil on the FJ today, and have to wonder why
the oil always comes out different colours on each side. It's been the
    same on all my bikes.

Why does old fork oil smell so disgusting too?

  4. It's a strange odour, agreed. It's worth familiarising yourself with it,
because it's not unknown for a potential buyer of your bike, on the test
ride and safely out of sight, to smear some engine oil on the forks,
say: "Fork seal's gone, mate...." and chip you down another 30 quid.

Engine oil and fork oil smell totally different.....

Oh, as does gear oil. I use that on the chain of the Duke and Trophy and
it's a strange bitter metallic smell.....

Yeah, but only after it's been used.

If it was those colours I'd have understood [1].

It's not even like it's different oils, it's one comes out a mucky
brown, the other a gooey grey.

The Morris stuff I got from the FJ club is blue, so I'll see what that
    comes out like next year.

[1] I do have an RYA certificate.

I'm guessing here, but cut aluminium has a similar smell, so maybe
    it's the ally swarf.

Also, forks have no breathers so there's no way for any pongs to
    escape.

**** it, why not just mug the poor fool?

This sort of behavior is disgusting.

Last week when I saw a £50 leccy toothbrush in sainsburys, and next to
it was a very similar £25 one, I grabbed the expensive one and bought
it. 10 seconds later I took it to the help desk, told them the price was
wrong and it should be £25. They agreed, but if the price of any item is
wrong, you get it free apparently. So, end result, free £50 toothbrush.

I may be disgusting, but my pearlies are whiter than white.

Left hand fork oil is a different colour than right hand fork oil so
    you don't mix them up.

Oh yes. I learnt what fork oil smelt like when I undid the small bolt
on the fork-leg of the CBX550. The ensuing shower and total stink
afterwards will stay with me forever..

    <shrug>

Everyone tries it, it's commonplace. Even the guy who bought the pukka
SP tried to knock me down, but didn't succeed cos I wasn't in a rush to
sell it, and in fact had a list of 6 prospective buyers.

But it was worth a try, on his part.

This wasn't bargaining, as in teeth sucking "ooh that looks like its
going to break type stuff" but deliberate and conscious deception.

    Which is slightly different.
