I have a second gen 2001 model Bandit 1200S and have replaced the fork seals
but still have a slight leak.

On following the Clymer manual it states that the seal open end should face
upwards. I have interpreted this to mean the side with the spring faces up
towards the handlebars. The problem is the Haynes manual shows picture and
the seal appears to be a different way up in different pictures! I have
installed the seals a different way up than the old ones so I am not
confident that I have got it right.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

I think you got it wrong. I've never seen a fork seal fitted that way
    up before.

Just curious, but why would you install a seal in a different way to the
original seals and the Haynes manual? I take it the Clymer manual
doesn't have pictures to guide you?

In short the side with the springs should be inside the tube.

Yeh, I'd tend to agree with that. Springy side in is the only way I've
ever fitted seals, apart from one seal that had a spring on both sides.
In that case, I fitted the smaller diameter double lipped part of the
    seal facing oil side.

Many bikes have the spring side of the seal on the top.
    Unfortunately a Bandit doesn't have upside-down forks.

Many Binned-its spend much of their existence upside down - or at
    least, attempting to be.

Thanks to all...............I guess it's another couple of hours stripping
and rebuilding for me then. I will attempt to reuse the seals but I bet a
third attempt wont be far behind!
