Forty hours? Good grief.

I had thirteen hours of lessons, in 12 lessons. Thanks to a bit of
parental direction and evening sessions it was pass first time, with no
    minors.

Still, I suppose these days you'll spend half of that sat in congestion.

That's just silly, I mean forty hours for a pilots licence what were you
doing? ;) I understand they don't even do spin recovery now, exercise 13?

My brother in law is 21. He's had his pilot's licence since he was
    14.

I agree with all of that, except for the auto bit.

I've never understood why that isn't an equivalent of the CBT for car
driving. Teach people the machine control first on private land, then
teach road use once you're sure someone can actually drive.

I recall that you used to be able to get 2 weeks holiday/fixed wing
training in California for a couple of grand a few years back.
    Presumably such deals still exist?

UK. I could be iffy on the "licence" bit though cos I know nothing
about flying licences. He's been flying since he was 11 and I'm sure
he was flying solo before he left school because the school made a big
    deal out of it.

*How* fucking much? If that's a true statistic, I worry about the drivers
who skew the average that high. If you need more than that to pass your
test, then perhaps you should decide that driving's not for you. Think I had
14 hours to pass mine, and I don't know anyone who had more than 20.

Pretty much what I told daughter No.2. When she started learning I said
I'd pay for her tests if she paid for the lessons, but I gave her three
chances - if she hadn't passed after three attempts then she should
reconsider whether she really should be behind the wheel of a car.

    She passed first time.

  13. I vaguely recall an instructor telling me they reckoned one and a half hours
per year of age, if that makes sense?

Erk, I had three hours BSM tuition before I passed my test aged 17 and 7
days, the majority of my learning was done from the age of 11 on private
land in my dad's Morris Minor, or hacking round the back roads of our
village in older mate's Mk1 Cortinas and Minis when I was about 15.

I remember getting a bollocking at school when I was that age because I
was spotted by a teacher driving my 18 yr old exes Hillman Imp with L
plates on it. Police never stopped L plated cars with youngsters
driving, they always assumed no-one would be so daft as to try that one
    when still underage.

Apart from the automatic bit, I'm in full agreement with you. Gear
selection and clutch use constitute part of machine control; for those
unable to master it (or have other valid reasons not to use manual
transmission), then it's time to consider an automatic.

A student may not solo until s/he attains 16 years of age, and a licence
cannot be gained until s/he attains 17 years of age.

I think your BiL is confused, or you mis-heard the conversation.

Yes, but when you took your test you could only fail for running the
bloke with the red flag over. It's a bit different today.
