Pip banged the rocks together and they said : I've always looked upon kit as one time use in an accident. (except lids - sometimes) The two piece I had kept my leg together and held up fine, apart from the bone exploding its way out through my leg and the leathers. The Dainese jacket that I low sided the AT with, it protected me properly, sitching didn't come apart but the leather wore away, instead of me. (got to get that patched, its still a nice jacket The HG winter trousers I had did rip up badly, but they are more to protect against the elements than tarmac so I never expected much of them. I'm not looking to spend megabucks for something that'll last dozens of crashes, after a crash leathers look shit and I still haven't found anywhere to fix the Dainese yet. *If* there are makes out there that look good, are comfy, well made *and* crash resistant then I'll definitely try them out for size. I'll have a look at the other brands mentioned here. I agree if the stitching, zips or fasteners fly apart, or the material around them rips, or its been made so there's high points that wear through very quickly and wreck the structure, then its crap and not worth buying as it'll probably protect you a lot less, or not at all in a crash.
Moon Badger banged the rocks together and they said : Now that is the sort of "seam/stitching test" thats valuable. Poor stitching or poor leather would just fall/rip to pieces.
Lozzo banged the rocks together and they said : But their website hasn't. God, what a pile of shite, how on earth they expect anyone to buy stuff based on that I don't know. Oh well, I'll visit Flitwick MCs and MJK tomorrow and see what they've got in.
frag says... Frag, honestly mate, I've heard eye witness accounts of that crash and that Dainese jacket didn't stand up well at all, it wore away a huge hole in less than 1 1/2 seconds of light tarmac surfing before you went into the scenery - it shoudn't have done that. It's a miracle you got away with no serious injuries where it hit the deck. The leather used in that and other Dainese garments nowadays is absolute shite compared to garments costing a third of the price, and certainly nowhere near as good quality as the leather bike kit they gained respect for in their early years. I've seen no end of Dainese and A/stars suits that are ripped to shreds from low speed accidents when I work for Graham on the odd Saturday. You only have to listen to some motorcycle clothing safety experts speaking about the expensive Italian leathers to know they are most definitely not worth buying. We've had one of the most respected and prolific of those experts posting here telling us the same story for a few years, so why anyone still buys Dainese and Alpinestars leathers is way way beyond me. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE (Black with added black bits) Suzuki Bandit 600S (Green with added shit bits) Yamaha SR250 Delusion (It's "Special") I ride way too fast to worry about cholestorol.

Lozzo banged the rocks together and they said : Thanks for heads up. I shall visit them Wednesday then!
Lozzo banged the rocks together and they said : <inspects jacket> Damage is to the r/h lower sleeve and the r/h shoulder. There is a 1cm long slit, right above the shoulder protection, which has a corresponding bit of wear when the tarmac finished with the leather/lining and started on the protection. So I assume my main surfing was on my rhs, weight on shoulder, going through protection which pressed against the leather making it wear out more in one spot. I know the damage was huge for the length of time spent surfing, I remember me and everyone else staring at in in disbelief. The sleeve has got a far larger surface area of scratching but no "depth" IYSWIM. Nah, the shoulder protection did its duty and it was only a low side into a verge, I didn't hit the road with much (vertical) speed. Guess what Mission sell? Alpinestars. Who TF sells decent kit now? There's hardly any bike shops left round here.
Hmmm, I tried a pair of trousers on last year month while clearing out before moving - when I tried to do up the waist button it broke.... violently - my eldest son reckoned he heard the sonic boom created by the button flying across the room and compounded his cheek by saying that it was lucky the button hadn't hit a window! I just reckon the uniform that the Navy issued me in 1985 was substandard and had significantly shrunk in the intervening 21 years
frag says... Flitwick M/cs do FT as well as some others, GLF do MJK, Arlen Ness and Teknic. They've got some Teknic suits up at £299 at the moment. For less than the cost of an A/stars or Dainese suit you can get a decent m2m MJK suit made in your choice of colours. Champ, Jon Haley, Christofire, Molly Gower and anyone who went to watch Team UKRM race in KRC will tell you how well they stand up to crashing. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE (Black with added black bits) Suzuki Bandit 600S (Green with added shit bits) Yamaha SR250 Delusion (It's "Special") I ride way too fast to worry about cholestorol.
I crashed a few times in my FT suit. The last one did burst a seam but only a small amount. My MJK suit has had one lowside, and has barely a scuff. It appears to be of much better quality and has resisted abrasion better, but the FT suit took a good few fuckups to kill it. Perhaps I got lucky with it.
[snip wonderful description of events] Oh dear. He's a one, isn't he? I imagine that was the best course of action.

Lozzo banged the rocks together and they said : Watching BSB right now, there are a large number of riders who appear to be wearing Alpinestar and Dianese kit. I would think they're worth a lot more than me and will demand comfortable, suitably decent protection. (I recognise the Dainese logo a mile away, the Star logo, does anyone else use that?) Oh and I want something for the France trip, I know the m2m stuff takes about 8 weeks to arrive from the foreign sweatshop so its got to be off the peg.
frag says... Don't for a second think that the suits the Dainese or Alpinestars sponsored racers in BSB wear are anything like the suits you or I could buy off the peg. The ones you or I could buy are made in China and Pakistan using the same quality of materials as you'll find in much cheaper siuits. As Paul V has pointed out, some manufacturers even use thread to stitch the leathers together that would be more suited for use in underwear manufacture. The racers have their suits hand made to measure out of the finest quality materials in Italy. They are not the same thing at all, and the race sponsorship is overhyped to encourage retail sales. All depends. MJK make off the peg stuff as well, of which Graham carries a fair stock. I'd have thought that after the trials and tribulations you've had with accident related injury, safety and quality of manufacture would be a major issue. Seriously Frag, don't buy a Dainese or A/stars suit, they really are overhyped fashion clothing, not quality motorcycle wear. The Tekinics and Arlenn Ness stuff is really good for the money, especially the Arlen Ness suits. On Monday a bloke I know had a major off at Cadwell which has broken his back, he slid and tumbled for a fair distance down the track and slammed into tyres back-first without a back protector. His Arlen Ness suit was absolutely brilliant and he didn't have one abrasion injury or broken bone anywhere except where his unprotected back hit in. There's scuffing all over it, no holes anywhere, no seams split and the titanium shoulder/knee protectors just got a heavily scratched. I rate them. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE (Black with added black bits) Suzuki Bandit 600S (Green with added shit bits) Yamaha SR250 Delusion (It's "Special") I ride way too fast to worry about cholestorol.
