French holidays & where to go.

    1. Do the French still all go on holiday at the same time, & if so,
    when?

    2. J & I are thinking of bunging a bike in the back of a van & spending
a couple of weeks in France. She wants to mooch around looking for old
knackered furniture to buy (hence the van), so it'll be a mix of
wandering around small towns, vegging in the sun, & playing on the
bike. Where would be a good base?

South west would be my choice for the roads, & the chance to cross into
Spain for a few days, but I don't know what the junk shop supply would
be like. Any recommendations for small(ish) towns that aren't total
    tourist traps?

    3. Would any froggie speakers be willing to take the odd phone call if
we[1] need a bit of translation in said junk shops?

[1] Well J - I'll be mostly avoiding them like the plague.

    August, mainly.
    i) La Rochelle
    ii) Montpellier / Perpignan
    iii) Strasbourg

All depending on which neighbouring country you're likely to visit
    I've 'never been outside Paris'.

    Late July, most of August.
Hmm, you've got lots of choice. I know very well the Hautes-Pyrénées
and a bit of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. There are loads of decent places
to see/stay. Easy to get over to Spain too. You could try places like
Auch, Tarbes and Pau for starters. But there are loads of smaller towns
    around the place.

As for the junk shop scene, can't help you there.
No probs. Depending upon when you do actually go, I may already be down
there. If you want, drop me a line.

Swot I thought. I wouldn't go then anyway as the place will be full of
    Brits towing caravans.
    Perpignan would do me nicely.
    I do indeed - thanks.

    Gorgeous little place.

I've mooched around the area a fair bit too, but...
....is the problem. Gut feeling is it would be a good area though.
    Will do, ta.

Then a visit to Dali's house is a must. You have a choice of using the
autoroute or the wonderfully scenic coastal road (some nice twisties
IIRC, but I was in the cage). The nearby town with the Dali museum is
also very nice bit I can't remember its name and CBA to google. There are
also some very nice roads inland in the foothills of the Pyrenees: it's
like driving through a winelist in the Languedoc.

Sounds like a plan. I've been to the Dali museum in Tampa, so it'd be
good to tick another off the list. I *like* Dali.
Aye, done them many times - on bikes I'm glad to say!

Heh. There are more on AADP who know my personal details than on UKRM
(you're the only one, I think), actually. Probably 'cos I spend more
    time there than on UKRM.

    Actually, 'ang on...

Then be warned that the house, which is wonderful, does admission by
timed ticket: you may be able to pre-book on the Internet. The Museum (in
Figueras) has the largest collection of his work in the world (they
claim). That was busy but not heaving when we went in June 2000, bored
    school-parties are a problem though.

From there walk down the rambla of Figueres and see the toy museum, lovely.

I'd add Girona (Gerona if you have a 30 years old map).

Heh - will do. I'll have to do some sums, but I'm now wondering if it'd
make more sense to hire a van down there to move all the bits we buy
into one place, then get them freighted back.

Would certainly be cheaper in ferry & fuel costs, & J would probably
fill the van in two days, making the extra 12 days of hire pretty
pointless other than the couple needed to get back home.

Figueras. I had a wander round the Dali Museum, picked the wrong day,
though... The place was absolutely rammed full with coach parties,
trundling round with bloody loud tour guides, who have a bad habit of
trying to shove you out of the way.

There are several other museums in Figueras, too, if you're in the
    area for a while.
