French Run 2008 - early warning

OK, folks, here we go. I know it's ages until early May 2008, but
sorting out a hotel that can handle 50+ people requires early
    preparation.

The date/venue for 2008 will be Friday 2 and Saturday 3 May (Monday 5
May is a Bank Holiday, to allow people to recover) and the Le Grand
Hotel in Maubeuge, on the edge of the Ardennes. Several of us stopped
off there on our way to Chimay this year, and it scored highly
    because:

    1. Decent grub.
    2. Reasonably cheap booze.
    3. Proper breakfast.
    4. Guv'nor speaks excellent English.
    5. Plenty of bars within staggering distance.

    Details here:

In addition, it's got just about enough space to handle us all. And
it's close to some scenic roads, and WW1 battlefields, which are
always worth a visit. And it has streets named after Clément Ader and
Roland Garros, both pioneers of aeronautics. It also has a Rue due
Gazomètre, and a Rue du 145ième Régiment d'Infanterie, mind you, which
suggests that the town fathers were struggling for attractive things
    to name other streets after.

Price yet to be discussed, but it'll be smilar to the usual: in other
words, something in the region of £125 per head, based on two people
sharing a room, for two nights half board, to include a four- or five-
course dinner each night, and your ferry crossing. Booze extra. This
Is Not Expensive. Supplement for single room sociopaths.

Those who've participated in previous French Runs will know the form.
Newbies: it's invariably a bundle of fun, highway hooliganism, and
epic alcohol consumption. It's a good way to get to know other ukrm-
ers (and their bikes, because Saturday afternoon/early evening is
    always a huge CIHAGM-fest).

With a group this size, we usually get offered two free places. I
swipe one, because I'm DFV-ing it, and the other is offered up in a
draw on Friday night. Ogden won the last one, ISTR.

There will almost certainly be a deposit to pay well in advance. I've
contacted the hotel, and provisionally reserved all their rooms. We
    shall see.

Good for you. I've emailed TOG already, too.

They're great trips, but you *will* need good waterproofs.

Not far from Bavay where I remember visiting some impressive Gallo-roman
    remains.

    <googles>

Ah yes - largest Roman forum outside Italy.

How can anyone resist a visit to 'Bagacum'?

I also remember negotiating a section of pavé just after crossing in to
    Belgium.

If you don't crash does that mean someone else has agreed to do the

You'd probably need an address close by to drop a spare set of clothes?

Also René Fonck, Henri Farman, Louis Bregeut, St-Ex and others. There's
even a Rue Gambetta down the road in Hautmont.
