  1. All have made it to the hotel safely, but there have been some 'issues'.

First was Dodgetr whose new Wing has a huge hole in the fairing. The
cranking handle for winding down the landing legs on the trailer dropped
off a truck ahead of him, hit the tarmac, bounced, sailed trough the air
and embedded itself in the front of the Wing.

This was a serious large piece of metal. If iot has hit his leg it would
    have taken it off.

The truck stopped, and then the driver climbed back into his cab and
    fucked off.

We went past as there were already two bikes in attendance and five
minutes later it was my turn. The K went dead, or at least the engine
did. Smoke was pouring out from behind the right-hand side panel. Oh
    dear.

About three-quarters of an hour later, an interestingly melted section
of obviously essential wiring had been stripped right back to bare wires
and wrapped in HazMat tape as that was all we had available (doesn't
    everyone?).

    And it started.

Why didn't the fuse blow? Ah, that was the first thing I checked. All
the fuses in the box are 15 amp. Hmmmmmm.

Bonwick's K is misfiring - Lozzo, stop laughing - and we rode through
the biggest thunderstorm I've ever seen. Massive rain and hail.

Last night was the usual over-indulgence and there's another happy local
    barman.

  3. If previous form is anything to go by someone will end up coming home by
AA relay having run out of magic smoke a mile or so before the ferry and
someone else will get a good nicking for being a little too enthusiastic
with the throttle on that lovely swoopy bit on the M20 and a third party
will run out of petrol when he finds out his Platinum Ego card doesn't
    work in foreign.

Hmmmm - new plastics and a new loom at least.
Sounds like the inn sewer ants might write it off.

  9. Heh. A call to Brian Giles elicited the information that the section of
wiring that fried is the lead to the sidestand cut-out and that the jack
plug can simply be shorted across to bypass it. A paper clip and some
    tape would do it.

The damage to the wire got less the further way it was from the point
where it shorted to earth. Where it enters the loom proper there's
definitely signs of heat, but not total destruction as there was lower
down. I'll have to remove some of the wrapping off the main loom and see
just how bad it is - see of the pants says it's probably not badly
damaged enough to warrant replacement, but if it is it's just these two
    wires.

Covered about 120 miles today on a bimbling sightseeing tour with some
others, and it's running fine. Fingers crossed: I'll sort it properly
    when I get home. If.

Other ukrm-ers were visibly impressed at the bodge that got it going
    again. Cameras were clicking.

Meanwhile, Bonwick has had the coils off his K1100RS and has cleaned up
all connections, sprayed WD40 everywhere and is hoping for a miracle.

Dodger says he's going to chrome the huge piece of metal that struck the
Wing. The hole in the fairing is bad enough, but it's done some internal
damage to the headlight adjustment system (electric) and a fairing
fastener exited into his lap through one of the air vents.

It seems to have recovered after WD40 was applied to the coil
connections but will need further investigation.

We hopped on a train at Calais rather than endure the 3 hour wait for
the ferry and ended up getting home just after 4pm.

  15. First pic; on the hard shoulder of the autoroute. Helmet in foreground
is Colin Irvine, who stopped to render assistance and did sterling
service in so doing. Thanks, Col.

Pic 2 is the completed bodge which got us to the hotel, plus the
Saturday bimble, and then home today.

I guessed as much when you didn't appear in the ferry queue or on the
hard shoulder after you left the services just after Abbeville.

I used the M40 as usual, though Ogden's news that the M1 was closed near
Northampton was the clincher. M25 not too bad at all and good progress
was made. The lack of streamlining on the Shiver seems to have a
significant effect on fuel consumption beyond a certain cruising speed,
but the Puig fly screen means I have less of a stiff neck than after the
run back from Dieppe on the Voxan.

We stayed on N's and D's all the way to J36 ogf the A16, and filled up
    at J11 of the M20.

188 miles for 18 litres. About 45mpg, not bad into that bloody wind.

I set a new record of 71 miles until the fuel light came on ...
rolling off the ramp at Dover. I know this because I figured out
how to reset the trip counter!

  20. BMW was managing about 48-49mpg over the weekend. It's always been
    extraordinarily economical.
