crikey, i honestly don't know, I wasn't there, I've no idea what was
actually said on both sides. nor, i suspect, do you.
Again, no idea about the whole damned country. Certainly not permitted
in the Met, but again, that's not to say it *never* happens.

I've merely tried to answer a few questions which were put to the
group, and have clearly mentioned that I am relating the practices
used in the Met. I'm not trying to go for a blow by blow account of
Champ's stop. Just tried to give a general overview for general
mulling over. Take from it what you will.

Bear, I get the idea that you have a deep loathing of Police, for
whatever reason. That's fair enough. However please try to at least
see that I don't get into the whole "they're always right, you're
always wrong" vibe. I'm really trying hard to just shed a bit of
light on what "should" happen. To expect me to know the ins and outs
of a duck's arse about each individual circumstance is pushing it a
    bit.

Should anyone here get stopped by either myself or my working partner,
then I can probably answer the whole "Then why did....." question.
Outside of that, I wouldn't want to speculate.

    Strongly agreed.

Yup, agreed yet again. However a combination of no insurance and
incorrect (or no) licence would take them out of the FPN realm and
into the "Before the bench" realm.
Aye, it's a half arsed solution to an increasingly worsening
situation. The folks at the pointy end really do care. it's them
wot's higher up in the various "gummint" depts that are the problem
    IMHO.

Why is it when someone has negative experience of the police, they're
    always anti-police?

Most of us were brought up to respect the police; that respect's been
lost to a large extent because of the actions of the people we're
supposed to trust, not because people are mindlessly anti-police.

Too many coppers act like the scum they're supposed to protect us from
    these days...

OK, not strictly true. It's a requirement to _have_ such documents and
show them when asked by a Police officer. If you don't have them on
you, the producer will be issued and an offence committed if you fail
to heed it within 7 days.

I respect the police in general.

However, I expect to be treated with the same respect by them. When
they've stopped me they tend to treat *me* like a moron and chose to
patronise me, more often than not they're younger than me.

My 'problem' with the police is that in my dealings with them I've not
    been happy with their attitude:

    1. I had neglected to renew my car tax, it was about 2 weeks overdue.
The office that stopped me confiscated the disk- I'm sure he had no
right to do this. It was all about asserting his small-minded
    authority.

    2. I overtook a traffic car on a two lane a-road, speed limit 50 at
about 55mph. I got pulled over... and told off for not using more power
and passing him faster. I pointed out that had he not been a police car
I would have been going faster. He responded that he could outride me
on his BMW (I was on a 9r). I suggested this was a bit brash when he
hadn't seen me ride, he got 'official'.

    I could go on.

Maybe you can explain why I was stopped in the car for no insurance, I
was given a fixed penalty, rather than a producer? I'd been insured
with the same ins co for 10 months so nothing to do with a recent
change of details. I took my documents to the station who took the
fixed penalty notice away from me. No explanation was given as to why
one was issued rather then a producer in the first place.

  10. Bear scribbled:
I'd like to see Champ detailing "threatening".

I'd also like to think that the impounding of the vehicle serves a dual
purpose, to remove uninsured vehicles off public roads, and if that
vehicle is stolen, to get it back to the rightful owner.

If some tealeaf nicked my bike, got stopped, was amiable with the
police and would otherwise be let on their way apart from an insurance
    check I'd be glad.

Unfortunately not the officers who stopped me because I didn't think
about it logically and to be honest wasn't sure what the usual
procedure was [1]. After I got home I phoned a tame magistrate to ask
advice who said it sounded very unusual. I asked at the station and
    they didn't have an explanation.

  14. I get a similar response from the local boys (South Wales). Some of them
reckon it's got so bad their thinking of jacking the job in.

  15. This is the universal database integrity issue. Customer has to believe
it because there is nothing else they can use. I wonder what audits
produce in the way of errors.

It's more fun in a real police state when they say your papers are not
good enough then lock you in a room where the bulb is unshaded and the
    furniture screwed to the floor.

They were wearing leather coats and speaking German too.

Sour taste? I was just so happy they let me out.
