My car insurance is a *lot* more than my bike insurance. mainly due to having a car written off last year by Jennifers "friend". -- Adie (replace spam with nickname to reply) UKRM FAQ: http://www.ukrm.net/faq/ Triumph 955iSS / ZX9R / GSF1200 bandit (for sale) / CG125 MRO#11 BOTAFOF#7 BOTAFOT#130 DIAABTCOD#17 MIB#24 YTC#16 BOB#15 ex-UKRMMA#22 BOMB#11
Not according to the broker I dealt with last year when I asked whether a bike theft in 2002 would count against me when sorting out car insurance. It's a bit like asking whether house contents count against your bike insurance, or road accidents affect your travel insurance. The only safe answer, otoh, is "ask the broker/insurer"

Auntie Corole "Erm, well you see the actual cost of insurance is minimal, hardly anything at all really, less than a fiver probably, the rest is our broker fee."
Same here when I called to add the moped [1]. It was cheaper to just swap it over... I don't know how any broker justifies £30 for, basically, pressing some buttons... Some do, some don't. One company increased my car insurance from 350GBP to >900GBP when I mentioned that my bike had been knocked over (while parked) by a third party. Me: "But it's another vehicle, insured on another policy, and it's nothing to do with the policy you're issuing." Droid: "But it's part of your driving history." Me: "How can it be part of my driving history? It was parked! I was in my flat at the time!" Droid: "OK, but it's part of your *motoring* history". OTOH Churchill, when I told them about this incident, couldn't understand why I was telling them, as incidents concerning my bike were nothing to do with a car policy. I insured with Churchill. <fx: nods> Ohhhhh, yes yes yes yes yes! -- <8P Wizard Suzuki GS550 "I like that. Wizard wrote Auntie Carole and I were discussing this yesterday in respect of their 6 wheeler policies and they said that when you start with them you take both bike and cage bonuses and aggregate the two. We didn't discuss what they do in the event of a subsequent claim though. I suspect it involves extra cost either way.
Wizard scribbled: They don't let me use my no claims bonus on both policies at once, so I don't tell them anything about any other policies. If they want to keep part of the insurance policies seperate, I'll keep them both totally seperate. Its nice to know some companies out there have their heads screwed on properly. The view! The view!!
steve auvache scribbled: Interesting, I'll have to give them a bell next time the car's up for renewal. Reduction of NCB increasing car&bike premiums?
frag wrote Give the others a a bell as well, from what I have seen on here they are not always the most competitive on the block. Depends what group they make their money from really and if you fall in it or not. Yuss, they take 5 years off the total and if that leaves you with less than 5 years your premium goes up accordingly next year is exactly how they are doing it this week.
AAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!! What a shitter, mate. I'm expecting your usual "It's only a bike" response, but it's not the same as if some blind, ham-fisted twat of a driver had skittled it in Tesco's car-park or you'd slid it up the road yourself, is it? I was utterly pissed off when the Triumph got blown over in high winds once, far more so than when I highsided it... :-(
If noone else has mentioned it, check your *household* ins pol. Mine surprised me recently when I learned that it covered me for damage/theft to my bike (or any other vehicle owned by me) on the driveway.
I was quite surprised recently to learn that in CH it does exactly this. Protected means no loading, no increase, no nothing. Which is nice. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ GSX-R1000K3 `\\ | //' BOTAFOT#3, SbS#2, UKRMMA#13, DFV#8, SKA#2 `\|/` `
steve auvache scribbled: Yup. I got the AT insured with Bennetts then two weeks later got the VStrom, the underwriter wouldn't cover me on the VStrom so had to take out new policy. Had to stick with Bennetts since they were the last insurers I used and will let me carry on my 2 years NCB from just over 2 years ago, no one else will. Got a brilliant quote from EBike insurance, they do multi bikes as well, but they're a brand new company so I'll see if they're still around and still competitive next year. I also imagine its a strong tie in as well, how many other insurers will let you "split" the NCB from Auntie Carol onto seperate bike & car policies?
frag wrote snip Unfortunately they do seem to conduct their business in such a way that you are effectively locked in to them if you make a claim. Which, from my POV is a bastard as this round I was intending to see what the market could offer me[1] anyway. [1] Postcode, age, number of years in the saddle all this stuff adds to the discounts but even with my new claim on the books AC are still discounting me to the point where they simply won't give me any more. Time to look around methinks.
You still have to declare it as an accident when you take out new insurance. I'd also have a problem because my company would laugh and tell me to **** off.
