Friday - windy, cool ride

The RedShad and Brian showed up at 830am and after looking over their bikes
for them we took off to N. Denton to meet one of RedShad's riding buddies.
We were going to head west to Jacksboro on 380, however an airplane crash or
something had law enforcement blocking the road off just west of Denton.
Using my best of the bunch GPS we detoured around the area and got back on
route. It was windy from the North and cold to me and didn't really warm up
the entire ride. We made it to Jacksboro and Acorn had to peepee so we found
him a suitable Shell franchise. We didn't mind the small delay 'cause he was
otherwise behaving himself astride the BB.
Hiway 4 out of Jacksboro on into Graford where we had lunch at the local and
only cafe. Brian and me had a very good burger while RedShad and his buddy
    had okra.
I have a habit of using the kickstand down to kill my bike and usually turn
off and remove the key. But the distraction of this fine bunch of riding
partners caused me to skip step 2. Mounting up after lunch found my prized
Voyager only tick ticking at the starter, we had bullshitted too long in the
cafe and the battery was drained. I got the fatboys to push for awhile but
the battery was too low to fire the engine. I walked around town trying to
borrow some jumper cables, but only got suggestions as to who may have a
set. By the time I had hit about 3 suggestion points to no avail the battery
had built up a little and we tried the push thing again. It kicked off this
time and we were on our way.
We crossed over the Brazos out of Graford and the water was running clear
and inviting but with the battery still low we declined the invite and keep
the rpm's up on into Palo Pinto. Man is it good and green everywhere, tks
    for the rain Wakko.
RedShad and his buddy were getting confused by the twist and turns of hwy 4
and by the time I got to Palo Pinto they were what you call way back there.
I made the little jiggle 4 to 380 to 4 with Acorn zooming around the area on
the BB. You see the suspension on the Voyager is acting up and I'm wobbling
considerably in left hand curves. Although the BBB could have easily left me
behind, Acorn sez he was hanging with me to spot the wrecker in when and if
I lost it. I like the wobble and it makes the ride more interesting than
those on the bikes that hold the line - how do they stay awake...
After Brian and myself stopping 4 times to allow the stranglers to catch up
we made it to Cleburne. Between Cleburne and Grandview we came up behind a
Johnson County Deputy patrol car. The deputy was running about 5mph over
the limit and I motioned for Acorn to pass it, just kidding of course. The
Walker came out in him and he got right on the bumper of the patrol car.
After a couple of miles the deputy was waving him off with the back off
signal. Acorn just shifted to the left a little, looking like he was looking
for a passing opportunity. After another mile the deputy turned on the
overhead lights, thinking the rider of the BB must not see him, he is too
close. Meanwhile the rest of us were backing off, trying to disassociate
ourselves from the Acorn on the BB, I mean we have no idea who he is. Coming
into Grandview the deputy spotted a bumpy gravel road and hooked a quick, no
signal, right turn trying to shake the BB, it was like a backwards pursuit.
Well the deputy was correct, Acorn doesn't do gravel and he was free. We
gathered at the Interstate35, kissed goodbye and headed North with the
exception of RedShad buddy 'doc' who headed into Maypearl. At hwy 67 in
Alvarado Brian peeled off toward Dallas and the RedShad and I gunned it on
into cowtown. Windy with a lot of bad Good Friday traffic, about 300 to 400
miles, depending on where home base for us, and a good one.

it is in some peoples blood to do that.

Louie, your ride report was good too.It really was.

I did that very thang', when I got back into riding 4 years ago.

I'd never had a MotorBike, with one of them KIckStand ''off'' switch
    thangs.
I still dont appreciate 'em. <g>

Nurmerous times, I would have to go back out to check if I switched off
    the dern ignition.

But one time, up on Wilamena Mountain, I didnt.

All of my family riders and Me and Honeyjay, rode there for the day, to
pick'nic, and ride over to Talihena, and ride on down and back home.

I left it on, because the KS killed it, and I forgot. We pushed and
pushed, but mine had been sitting atleast 2 hours, and it was not a very
    new'un.

They had to borrow a ''battery'' jumper deal from the lodge.

We liked to have never found the ''battery'' on that 600Shadow, it was
buried, why do they bury them' batteries.

(Boy, the Valk's battery is ez to git' to)

Anyway,I never did that again, by george.

--PeeS; The only good and practical notion of your deal, Louie, was you
broke down to an extent, and caused trouble for your buddies.

Louie, you have joined the ''brake-down'' club. The elder walker, and
    me, now you.

RedShad will, only in time, be next.
Just a matter of time, which will eventually validate ''Murphees Riding
Law, handbook, put out by H.D.''
    (or something like that?) <wink>

I wasn't there, either.. hmmm.. Too damned cold for this old man to be out
there fanning around with those hardcases..

Can't say for sure, but I'm thinking that Louie is just making all this up..
    Every-
one knows that no self respecting Walker would "taunt" some poor old LEO..
Anyway.. reads like the boys had themselves a pretty good ride, in spite of
this winter snap we're having.. My cap is off to them..

I'd just like to say for my part of this, that cop was WEIRD!

All the "funny" story aside, when I came up on this cop, he was behind
a van in front of him. For some odd reason, the cop slowed down and I
let the bike just glide to a slow instead of hitting the brakes. As I
got closer to the car, and it was about 20 feet or so at about 60mph,
this cop started waving his arms in the air, flipping his over head
lights on, mashing his brake on and off...just generally having a
panic attack. I thought to myself "this dude is not only weird, he
carries a gun". As I backed off just slightly (an inch or two...hey,
I've got LBS brakes and can stop WAY faster than Barney in front of
me) I continued on into the town where we found a city cop sitting
there. I wondered if this weirdo had radio'd ahead to beg someone to
get this motorcycle off his tail.

As was said in the report, it was like a backwards pursuit!

What nothing in your report of passing through the great town of Lipan?
Next time reverse your route and stop for lunch at Shelly's market.
Really great burgers. Small town grocery store across from the Bank.

Just a note about myself. Last long hill coming east into Lone Camp, spring
of 78, deer decided to take the right away, laid down my GS550 totaled it
and left me in the hospital for 3 days.

I will ride again when my kids are out of collage.

Atleast you were only n there 3 days. I have an aquaintence in the
Hospital around here, and he is going on 5 weeks, after going off the
road, riding with a PGR group. Broke his hip and more.
Hey I notice Richard said he laid ''it'' down.

See there, Tomorrow of Reeky, there are times when one needs to lay a
motorBike down. Tim thinks there's no time to lay one down, do you
    remember this, BillW.

Damned ole pole truck hauling logs pulled out in front of my cousin over
close to Nashville.. It was real close and when my cousin started braking
he was on a lot of sand and gravel that'd been scattered on the asphalt..
Well, that ole bike started to squirm and skid.. Didn't slow down much, tho.
When he realized he was going under the truck, he just layed that bitch
down and let 'er go.. He skidded one way, on his ass and the motorcycle
went under that damned truck.. My cousin lost about 40 lbs of ass and his
legs got broke, but he lived to ride again.. That bike was a total loss and
    it
sure was a nice one, too..

When I commented about what it was a shame the bike was tore up so
bad, he told me that the sucker wasn't worth trying to save it by riding
    under
that pole truck.. Well, guess you just had to be there..

Anyway, we had quite a discussion about the virtues of riding one down to
a stop and Tim Morrow had his point from the Handbook point of view.. I
remember that discussion/argument .. Don't think anyone changed their
minds or views on the subject..

Under normal conditions, I agree that you should make every effort to ride
it and stop.. There will be circumstances that will prevent you from doing
that, however.. such as a fuel spill on pavement .. When it comes to my
life, sacrificing that motorcycle is a small price to pay.. Usually, there
    isn't
enough time to think it through and make the right decision, so the rider
will have nothing more than reaction time, anyway.. A motorcycle that is
pretty much out of control and skidding on a loose surface isn't going to
be easy to maneuver by Textbook recommendations and the rider has to
choose which he values most.. the bike or his life.. I'll choose my life
    every
time.. That's my two cents ..

And at the end of the day, on any surface, you will find more traction
and control by keeping rubber to the road and using the brakes
effectively, than by grinding various metal and shiny bits on the
    asphalt.

Of course that is based on the assumption the rider knows how to brake
effectively and is practiced at emergency stops.
