It's just come to my attention that the Frogs have made, or will
shortly make it a mandatory requirement for crash helmets to have
several obtrusively large hi-vis reflective stickers on them. What's
the point in having EU-wide standards if they are going to do their
own thing? Fuckers. It's making my job a bit more complicated too. A
pox on the whole lot of them.

Well, BS6658 is still legal here, but has been effectively superseded
AIUI by ECE22.05. You try and buy a new helmet certified to BS6658.
Believe me, I work in a warehouse full of the bloody things, and
    they're all ECE22.05.

It is technically illegal to sell a BS6658 helmet for motorcycle use
in the UK. All new helmets sold for motorcycle use must comply with
    ECE 22-05.

This has been the case for about 2 1/2 years now.

Uh? never heard about that... and didn't notice any significant increase
in the stickers lately. AFAIK French authorities require CE-approved
helmets, period (in fact they would be in a lot of trouble if they
didn't, because that would reek of protectionism...)

Well, the company I work for just received a container full of helmets
from their French subsidiary company as a re-directed order. As they
were intended for the French market, many of them have had reflective
stickers applied already, and most of those which did not had the
stickers included separately. Maybe it's just for new helmets from a
    certain date.

It's often considered that the EU panders towards French interests
anyway; it's time that stopped. Maybe someone should give the French
some free F&M samples, shouldn't be too difficult?

It's certainly true that helmets are supplied with such stickers - my
    last Shoei certainly was...
.... and I bought that three or four years ago. But I've never heard
that it was a requirement as such.

Well, correct answer seems to be this: EU helmet norms have gone through
several versions (at least 22/03, 22/04 and 22/05). Norms up to 22/03
were less strict than the French NF norm, so the French authorities
didn't recognize them. They now accept 22/04 or 22/05 compliant helmets,
and the NF norm is now obsolete.

It is possible that the helmets you are talking about were, without the
stickers, only compliant with 22/03, and could still be acceptable in
    the UK.

Note that 22/04 and 22/05 aren't only about reflective devices. 22/05 is
the first one to check jaw protection in full-face helmets.

So ... have you forgotten the English words

or are you trying to show off ?

The common language in UKRM is, surprisingly, English

or should we all start posting in spurious foreign languages, just
    because we can ?
