Troll, perhaps? Whatever, a wrecker on Whitehorse Road near Mick Hone
around the Box Hill (Melbourne suburb) area quoted me around $500 for a
    used stock CBR1000 system.

Yeah, well, it's $100 if you've got 'em, and $500 if you need 'em ...

You mean you didn't actually _look_ at that bike before you bought it, BTH!?

Slab-sided, undistinguished, heavy, a real nothing. (your bike, not
    you....I know you're not heavy)

    :)

With such comforting words as those, I'm starting to suspect that you
    really *are* my brother!

    A not-talked-about bastard one, of course! ;-)

*Shrug* You pays your money and you takes your choice. There's a few
zealots about the place who foam at the mouth if another motorcyclist rides
the "wrong" marque/model, but I'm not one of them. ;-)

    Me neither ('cept for H-D).

I pretty much like 'em all even though many of them are far to impractical for
*me*. Whilst I like the look of R1s and Gixxers, I'd never own one. Flamin'
hell, my back wouldn't let me bend over to ride one nor would my legs fold up
to get on to the pegs.

I like BMW twins too - never owned one, never ridden one but I like the look
    of 'em.

But what would I buy if money was no object? Dunno. Possibly a BMW 1150RT
and a Suzi GSX-1400, maybe a Duc for the sheer beauty of it.

    Choices choices.

    oh then there's......

The difference is that in 1987 it was THE cutting-edge super-sport Honda. (They ran one in the NZ Castrol 6
    hour)...
By 1990 it had slipped into the sport-tourer category where, arguably, it was more comfortable....
(Although there wasn't a real SuperSport replacement until the CBR900RR in '94 unless you count the exotic
    RC30).

As a tourer it ain't bad - except for the annoying vibration in the right hand
if you travel at legal speeds. Get it to 125km/h vice 110 on the freeway and
it's fine. A Blackbird would suit me as a replacement if I wanted another 4
but I think I'd like a twin next
