hhhmm, as a dell systems engineer, I'd say you price expectation is a
    _little_ on the high side.
Have a look on the interwebby at their new kit.

    Just MHO.

What sort of money would you say an Optiplex SX260 box (no monitor), fitted
with a 40gb drive, and a P4 2.6 is worth, just out of interest?

What else does the Optiplex have and which case is it?

Is this a disposal or clearing the way for an upgrade? I might have an
interest if you're looking for a new PC and would be interested in a
    Dimension 8400.

256mb DDR, CD ROM drive (ejectable), 2 x USB ports in the front, 4 x USB
    ports in the back.

    Looks like this:

I bought it mainly for the 17" TFT that it came with as a clearance
package... and was going to use it as a replacement for my Athlon 1.8 based
deskto... but the lack of removeable storage, whilst I can buy some USB
based stuff to get round this, has put me off, and I've decided to maybe let
it go, and upgrade my main system instead.

My email addy is unmunged, if you'd like to email me...

That's the one with no PCI, no use to me I'm afraid. I fancy the next
case up as a(n) HTPC but I need space for my DVB-S card.

    <blatant plug>
    I've got a couple of Dimension 8400s coming ifyou're looking for a
machine. I don't have the full spec yet but they are at least 3.0GHz
P4, 250GB SATA and Audigy 2. I won't know the graphics or optical
drives until they arrive (good old Dell configuration management).
They will be well priced with warranty, I'll send you the spec in due
course if they are of any interest.

    cheers

Difficult market for that particular type of PC. Very small form factor. The
270 is fraught with problems and has now been superseded by the 280. Much
better idea as it now has a proper HD (SATA).
Not really sure what the 260 would be worth as it's not upgradeable, and
    not expandable other than USB.
    Best try it on ebay.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

That was why I said "offers around" because I wasn't 10% sure of the
    worth.
Cheapest new one is 800-ish quid inc VAT and it's a 2.2 Celeron. Not
    that stunning a machine.

    heh.

That's more down to the keyboard on this new lappy being in a
different place to the 2650 and meaning my typing has gone to shit.

    In the middle.

It's a widescreen laptop so with the keyboard in the centre there is a
lot more space around the edges. I naturally rest my hands right at
either side of the machine so the keyboard is further into the middle
    than I'm used to, IYSWIM.

Plus they've move the delete, home and end keys from the bottom right
to the top right which is buggering up my code writing no end.

Space is about 5 keys wide so ok. And the \`¬| keys are all in the
    same place I'm used to.

It's just the overall position of the keyboard. Oh well, I'll get
    used to it.
