Hardly the bargain you say it is.

There's dealers selling them for that with a warranty.

Yeah, it's about right, but it's not a 'bargain', is it?
Expand the search to national, and there's one dealer there advertising
one for £4995 with 8k miles on it, and a few around the £5.5-£5.6k mark.

(Yes, I know that's more expensive, but if I were spending £5k, I'd go
to £5.5k and get one from a dealer with some backup)

Close enough. It's an advert, he's got to make it sound good.
So roughly double the mileage. Makes a difference
So £3-400 more, again, quite a difference.
Well, yeah, that's what I did with the GSXR, but that Honda will still
be under warranty and if it's anything like Suzuki's it won't matter
    if it was bought privately.

Which reminds me, I need to chase the dealer about the warranty work
    on mine.

Really? I'd rahter buy privately. See the owner, what sort of bloke he
is. Ask him a few maintainance questions. Ask if there's any known
    problems. [1]

I'm amazed at the tat the smaller dealers buy.

[1] Pretty hard to lie if you're asked directly IYAM.

Er... I'd say a lot of people are very good at lying when asked directly.
Or perhaps, not a lot of people are very good at spotting a lie (including
    myself) when told directly.

Having sold several old clunkers over the years, I'd say that a private
seller is just as likely to be telling porkies as a dealer.

Don't mind buying cheap shit privately, but if I'm spending serious
money, then I'd go to a dealer every time. There's a lot to be said for
being able to wave the SoGA at someone who's pulled one over on you,
