You may have hit the nail on the head.

Pretty much what I did/do with my sprogs, pay the tuition fees and
accommodation and enough to survive on. Running a car, phone, boozing,
holidays etc they meet from their own resources. It does mean that the
eldest has a smaller loan to repay than some of her peers and is now
in a position to buy her own place.

  3. Do you mind? No fruit has ever sprung from my loins, nor is it ever
likely to, yet I can see your pov. If you were to be funding his entire
uni education, that'd be different, but from what I can make out, you'll
be taking the sting out of it a bit, that's all.
The lad must have some uni funds for beer, drugs and women, so think of
it as an investment - the cash you give him releases other monies.
Money goes in, money comes out - it's a tuba.

    About that much.
See above, it was a remark about the commentators up to the point I
    posted.
I intend to recklessly spend their inheritance so they may as well
    have some support now.

I'm not going that far, though I will send him with a box full of
ingredients, he knows how to cook.
    Too bloody right.
I can't think that far ahead atm.

Seconded. I usually go up the M25 one junction to the A2, but didn't
'cos I didn't know which bit would be shut.

  8. Maybe so. Who could ever have foreseen the demand for basket-weaving
    and golf-course degrees?

Feel free to tell me to sod off... but I'm just curious what you are
    planning to pay for?

After accommodation (and bills), food and books, the only other thing
_needed_ to pay for uni is tuition fees and those should be met by the
tuition fees part of the student loan.

Heh, in this case she's been finished nearly 2 years and is moving
into her own place with BF this week.

No, I wasn't fishing. It's possible to say something in a jokey,
non-serious manner, while still agreeing with the sentiment.

Exact details to be sorted out when we've sat down and gone through
the various forms, loans, bursaries options (and seen how much my tax
bill for last year is) but the idea is to reduce the loans he has to
    take out.

We've had a chat about it tonight and he thinks a contribution to
accomodation is going to be the best option so he knows he has a roof
over his head. The Maslow, Maslow, Maslow song [1] has obviously sunk
    in.
The idea is to avoid loans as much as possible.

[1] to be sung to the badger, badger, badger tune.

I think the important thing is to make sure the child doesn't believe
that they can go to university and not work through the bulk of their
    holidays to fund it.

If they try their hardest to find work to pay their way through
university then give them as much financial assistance as is possible,
if they think that going to university is a chance to see the World
between terms and their parents will give things up to make this
    possible then **** right off.

Someone will probably tell me why a parent should even consider giving
up something they want to do so their offspring can enjoy a 'gap year'
travelling but I'll never understand it. Let the little fuckers work
for a few years then see if they want to take a year out.

Oh, no, but they're designed to be zero in real terms (i.e. the
interest rate is the RPI). With a decent ISA, you could make a fair
    turn on that.

    ISA 6.2%, loan 4.8%, net 1.4% on £5k say is £70. p.a.. Barely worth
    the bother.
