The twist was bleedingly obvious and it is my least favourite of his
recent ones but I have half a shelf with all the Banks [1] except that
one and I know I bought it so it's niggling. Ex husband denies all
knowledge but will bring back my copy of Popco.

[1] I enjoyed Transition but mainly because it was more M than just
    Banks.

see, there's this thing called "TCP/IP" that was invented by a bunch
of - you know - real scientists and that, rather a bunch of hippy
geeks - that sort of works and that?

You /may/ have heard of it.

And in the midst of all this science, religion, literature, bullshit
and eldritch lore, the Kappa top box has been quietly snaffled by
    Statto. So it goes.

So, you trust the drones to do a decent install on your next home
    theatre upgrade?

Why would anyone be using co-ax in a decent install now?

Yes well it came along in revision 5. For LAN pre t'internet and for people
not trying to use ISDN to connect segments IPX/SPX was rather spiffy.

Good lord lets hope Oggie doesn't read this, we could relive the 90's

That got me thinking! Drew Major explained he saw LAN running IPX with
internet gateways running twin NICS/Protocols and TCP/IP outward facing. A
secure design. But Novell tended to think of Networks as big beasts and
probably rather ignored/missed the growth of SOHO.

I still think their technology was superior but relied upon highly trained
professionals to configure and deploy properly. So the world went the MS
route and every Cabbie with a PC at home became a Network Engineer

I know people have accused you of being a troll before, but I've
always given you the benefit of the doubt.

however, claiming the (near) universal adoption of TCP/IP as a
networking standard as having "went the MS route" is flagrantly taking
    the piss.

(having said that, we should all be using DECNET instead, IMO)

Well the two things rather co-incided don't you think. The spreading use of
internet connections and the growing dominance of MS workstations and small
networks. It's a tangled web and I can't be bothered to remember how it all
    happened.

I'm sure I mentioned before that this NHS Trust is a
    Novell/Groupwise/ZenWorks environment. It's about 80 servers and 4000 users
on a single NDS Tree. It makes me feel warm and wooly inside.
Cherist at least I'm living in the 90's. You're still in the 80's despite
being a tad younger than me (I think)

Really, no. Don't you remember MSN's origins? MS thought they could
both side-step the popularisation of the Internet and also get ahead
of existing online services such as AOL and Compuserve etc (this is
circa 1993 or so, IIRC). FFS, I had a working PPP connection on my old
Amiga *years* before there was a stable version of Winsock (and even
that wasn't an official MS product).
well, I do. I even (co) wrote a book about it ;-)
aha - but VMS was decades ahead of it's time, you see...

Pretty even, though Popco would just edge it I think. Author obviously
has a thing about homeopathy which makes me want to shake her. I keep
meaning to work through her other ones, only done those 2 so far.

M got me the new Atwood for my birthday so I've spent most of today
reading that - it's good, but atm Oryx and Crake has the edge.
